About this listen
Should a wicked man get the same justice as the righteous? When a violent pimp is murdered, Major Crimes Detective Dallas Nash is assigned the case. With no witnesses and weak evidence, he must make a choice—vigorously investigate the killing or go through the motions before casually sweeping it into an unsolved file. Plenty of people want Nash to stop—the prostitutes abused by the deceased, a do-gooder with a shadowy past, and a cop with his thumb on the scales of equity. Yet no one is pushing for him to continue the investigation. Will Nash walk through the city’s underbelly to find justice for a man who preyed on others? The Mean Street is the sixth book in the 509 Crime Stories, a series of novels set in Eastern Washington with revolving lead characters. If you like hard-hitting police procedurals with compelling personalities, grab this book today.

He’s the new owner of Rockafellers, a vintage record store struggling to find customers. Much of that is due to Headbangers, a competitor with a better product mix and an aggressive owner. There is also a local do-gooder group who wants Owen to fall in line with their vision for a kinder, gentler Costa Buena. None of that worries Owen, though, because he is determined to be the number one used-music store on the boardwalk - even if that means stepping on a few toes. But when a murder occurs shortly after his arrival, he’s identified as prime suspect number one.

Eye-opening
As always, this book was interesting, entertaining and full of facts on crime that I didn't know. Dallas Nash is the primary detective on this case of pimps being killed. Following the trail takes Nash through the sex trade as he hunts for the killer. There are run-ins with Morgan and Joey from the previous book and several possible suspects. The business aspect was chilling to me. Colin writes about real problems that happen with real people and I like that in his books. I'm not crazy about Nash's story mourning his wife and it does take up a good bit of the book, but he's making progress. While his depression and mourning for his dead wife depresses me, I'm glad he is finally forced to do something to help himself through the mourning process. Overall, this was a very real look at crime, life, depression and the start of healing - great story, but hard to listen to the pain at times.
Until reading this from the perspectives of the prostitutes, pimps, johns and police, I never realized how short-sighted and unfair the system is toward the prostitutes, "the products," versus everyone else involved. And I checked the statistics to be sure it wasn't just angled that way for the story. Very few johns or pimps are caught or prosecuted for buying/selling illegal services while prostitutes are statistically arrested frequently and unable to get out of the cycle with an arrest record, etc. Interesting and sad, but the laws are changing with a better understanding of human trafficking.
Damon Abdallah does a great job with the voices, the mood and making you feel you are hearing the voice and feeling the thoughts of the person he's reading.
