About this listen

A brand-new production of Andy Weir’s modern sci-fi classic, narrated by the incomparable Wil Wheaton, and featuring bonus content from the writings of Mark Watney.

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars.

Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there.

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.

Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills - and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit - he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

Wil Wheaton, who has lent his voice to sci-fi blockbusters like Ready Player One and Redshirts, breathes new life (and plenty of sarcasm) into the iconic character of Mark Watney, making this edition a must-listen for both longtime fans of The Martian and new listeners alike.

BONUS MATERIAL: This edition includes the following extras:

  • “Diary of an AssCan” - Mark Watney, new astronaut
  • “I Made It!” - A happy letter to Mom
  • “Car Trouble” - A somewhat sad letter to Mom
  • “The Earthling” - A postscript. *Available for the first time in this recording

Featured Article: The Most Stellar Sci-Fi Authors of All Time

Science fiction is a genre as diverse as you can imagine. There are stories that take place in deep space, often depicting teams exploring or running away from something; stories that focus on life at the most cellular level, such as a pandemic tale; and stories that take place in times that feel similar to our own. Depicting themes of existentialism, philosophy, hubris, and personal and historical trauma, sci-fi has a cadre of topics and moods.

Compelling Survival Narrative • Witty Protagonist Humor • Realistic Scientific Elements • Emotional Storytelling

R.C Bray version is awesome, Wil Wheaton is awesome. This is one of the rare cases where a book didn’t need to be re-recorded but I’m glad it was.

This book is laugh out loud funny, incredibly interesting, thought provoking, creative. I just can’t speak highly enough about it, now I have two different narrators to chose from whenever I want to give this instant classic another listen.

Listen to them both!

Awesome story-backfilled the movie. A little too much technical description.

But was Billy Mummy not available? Wesley Crusher? Really?

Wil Wheaton? Really?

What a great book! I had watched the movie, but as we all know how it is with film adaptations of books, I thought I'd finally listen to the original.
Wil Wheaton does a great job with the narration.

It amazes me that I was glued to my earplugs although nothing much happens throughout the book. Yet, this is not about action in space, but about survival in an extremely hostile (and lethal) environment, and this man's fight for survival was gripping.
I wasn't even sure the protagonist would actually make it off Mars -- because, you know, American films have a tendency to make up Happy Endings even if there are none in the book they're based on.

I'm glad that I now know how the book really ends. :)
This was my first buy and listen of the year, and I think that was a great start.

Nail-biter

At first I was concerned because RC Bray was such a good narrator , but Wheaton did a phenomenal job and really brought the story to life !

Great Narration

I loved the book and the movie. I had a hard time following the story though as all of the characters basically sounded the same. I would love to listen to this book again with a different narrator.

Loved the story, narration could be better

Fun in a different voice & extras, but I like RC's voices. It would have been nice to hear the author's notes and story of the publication, as well as corrections that he's brought to light in various places.

Still a favorite that I've listened to many times, and love Will's narration on many books, but R.C. Bray was perfection.

Fun in a different voice & extras, but I like RC's

I’ve listened to a LOT OF GOOD AUDIOBOOKS BUT THIS ONE WASNT JUST A HOME RUN, it was a GRAND SLAM.
I’m not into science or math or space but this was enthralling. The physics stuff was casually presented in a lay person relatable manor.
Just do DAMN GOOD! Wish I could give it a 6!

So moving!!! Funny, frightening & poignant

I had really enjoyed this movie but the audiobook really blew me away. And it was a great idea to get Wil Wheaton to read the book given all the great audio work he has already done for different science fiction stories. He had a particular vocal cadence that worked especially well for our protagonist and made the hundreds of Martian sols go by quicker than you'd expect.

As always, the book had more depth than the movie and I appreciated all the nuances as masterfully brought to life in this reading. And the sort of "bonus" content at the end really added extra context to things that just made the book even better.

Even better than the movie

RC Bray is a legend, but Wheaton does a better Whatney. There I said it.

As good as the original version.

Loved it, great story, characters and technical details. Enough twists to make me focus. Kept me riveted.

Wow, what a ride... from Mars!
