About this listen
A powerful true story of loss and hope by one of the biggest names in sports media.
On September 11, 2001, Joe Maio went to work in the north tower of the World Trade Center. He never returned, leaving behind a wife, Sharri, and 15-month old son, Devon. Five years later, Sharri remarried, and Devon welcomed a new dad into his life.
For thousands, the whole country really, 9/11 is a day of grief. For Adam and Sharri Maio Schefter and their family it’s not just a day of grief, but also hope. This is a story of 9/11, but it’s also the story of 9/12 and all the days after. Life moved on. Pieces were picked up. New dreams were dreamed. The Schefters are the embodiment of that.
This book will give voice to all those who have chosen to keep living. It’s gratifying and beautiful. But also messy and hard. Like most families. Except that one day every year history comes roaring back. How do you embrace that? How do you honor that?
The Man I Never Met is also a peek at Adam Schefter, the man behind the headlines and injury reports; a real person who has a real family. His book will follow in the path of recent ESPN books by Tom Rinaldi and the late Stuart Scott - books that have transcended sport to examine the raw emotion of life.

Still Learning is India Oxenberg’s intimate, first-person account of how she was lured into and, seven years later, escaped from the NXIVM cult, DOS. As the secret sorority within NXIVM's vast Ponzi network, DOS was created by Keith Raniere and his acolytes to serve as a source of "slaves" to Keith and the other “masters”. Despite the fantastical headlines, the focus of Still Learning reflects what many parents and age peers of India’s will recognize as a far more familiar 20-something conundrum - a new adult trying to discover who she is.

In the early 1960s, JFK declared that science would take us to the moon. He also declared that science would make the “remote reaches of the mind accessible” and cure psychiatric illness with breakthrough medications. We were walking on the moon within the decade. But today, psychiatric cures continue to elude us—as does the mind itself. Why is it that we still don’t understand how the mind works? What is the difference between the mind and the brain? And given all that we still don’t know, how can we make insightful, transformative choices about our psychiatric conditions?

Wonderful story that will tug on your heart strings
If I could give this book 10 stars, I would. It is wonderfully written and narrated by the author. Schefter gives an honest account of stepping into a family that was broken apart by the 9/11 attacks. His path to finding love and wholeness is beautiful and raw. He pays respect to his wife’s former husband in such a wonderfully way that I was moved to tears many times. Do yourself a favor and listen!!

What an amazing story. I know Schefter as a successful ESPN reporter, but this story gives a whole new perspective. It’s so well-written, so thought-provoking and inspiring. It’s an emotional read, but one that is so well worth it. I wish Adam and his new family all the best. This is a story that needed to be told. RIP Joe Maio.

I can’t say enough good things about this book!
I chose this book to help me better understand what my close friends who have lost a spouse go through. I love the hope and love story that came after such a devastating loss. I also wanted to hear Adam’s perspective as it hits close to home. I appreciated his honesty that it can be messy, untraditional and that’s okay.

Powerful
As a Widow now in a serious relationship with a Widower I found the story touching. It resonated with me as my new love and I often feel as if our late spouses are with us. We definitely feel that they had a hand in our meeting. We keep them alive in our memories by sharing their stories. We’ve incorporated them into our story. Like Adam, I too feel honored to be the next steward in a love relationship with another’s spouse—and I feel a responsibility to her husband and children to remember her to them frequently. I never met my new love’s late wife but I am thrilled I feel as if I know her via her husband and children. I’m glad to hear that Adam has had many of the same experiences. Thank you for sharing your family’s story.
