About this listen

The Lost is the next mystery from author Jeffrey B. Burton starring an extraordinary cadaver dog and her handler.

Glencoe, Illinois: A home invasion turned kidnapping at the mansion of billionaire financier Kenneth J. Druckman brings Mason “Mace” Reid and his cadaver dog, Vira, to this wealthy northern suburb of Chicago. Druckman was assaulted, left behind while his wife and young daughter were taken for ransom.

Brought to the scene by the FBI, Reid specializes in human remains detection, and Vira is the star of his pack of cadaver dogs he’s dubbed The Finders. After Vira finds the dead body of the mother, former supermodel Calley Kurtz, everyone is on high alert to find Druckman’s missing daughter before the five-year-old disappears forever. But the trail Vira finds on the property’s dense woodlands leads right back to Druckman himself.

With the help of Detective Kippy Gimm, Reid and Vira must race against the clock. Nothing is as it appears to be . . . and the red herrings could be lethal.

This is the third and final book in this series and sets the stage when Mace and his kids (his group of HRT dogs he calls "The Finders") are called to the home of billionaire financier Kenneth J. Druckman. This gentleman is reporting that he just experienced a home invasion and that his wife and his daughter were kidnapped and were taken for ransom. Things take quite the turn when Mace and Vira (his brilliant Golden Retriever) discover the deceased body of Mr. Druckman's wife - former supermodel Calley Kurtz. It then becomes a race against time as Mace is determined to find Druckman’s missing five-year-old daughter before time runs out.

As usual, nothing is what it seems and Mace and his team find themselves in the middle of craziness. Thankfully, this time he has the help of Detective Kippy Gimm as they try to unravel the crazy circumstances.

Even though I was thrilled to drop back into the world with Mace, Vira and the gang, I was also sad knowing that this book was the third and final book in this series....so far. Now, I am going to join the rest of the people who are standing by ready and waiting for the possible "next book" in this series.

One thing though, that I just could not seem to get over. The five-year-old in this story was not portrayed as your typical 5-year-old. No, she both talked and sounded more like an older child - say around the range of 10 years old to maybe 13 years of age. That was a hard issue to come to grips with as this character had quite the bit of page time. No matter how much I tried to ignore the feelings that occurred every time the little girl's actions or behaviors were featured.

Other than that, this was another fun and interesting book and I am really hoping that the series continues for a long time.

This story wandered a little to much for me and I felt Elvira was not the star as she usually is . Enjoy it anyway!

After all of the depressing, heavy things going on in the world these days, it is wonderful to escape to Mr. Burton's books for a spell! Thank you!

Already looking forward to book 4. Vira (Ira with a V) and her other detection dog partners, as well as Mace and Kippy (the human helpers) make up a great team!

I absolutely enjoyed all three books in this series. The main characters are very likable, the plots are interesting and of course the dogs are lovable.

The mystery was a good one with lots of twists, but the format was disconcerting. The author put you in the mind of all of the relevant characters in a time sequential manner. If you are expecting a good mystery, you win. If you are looking for a mystery led by Human Remains Dogs trained and living with Mace Reid, you might be flummoxed and possibly disappointed. I went in without any real expectations, so I enjoyed it.
I requested and received a free ebook copy from St. Martin's Press/Minotaur Books via NetGalley. Thank you!
