About this listen
Long recovered from the ravages of the Riftwar, the land and people of the kingdom of the Isles thrive. Nicholas, the youngest son of Prince Arutha, is intelligent and gifted but vastly inexperienced. In hopes of hardening him, his father sends him and his irreverent squire, Harry, to live at Rustic Castle Crydee to learn of life beyond the halls of privilege. But within weeks of Nicholas and Harry's arrival, Crydee is viciously attacked by unknown assailants, resulting in murder, massive destruction, and the abduction of two young noblewomen. The raiders have come from a pirate haven and are no ordinary foe...but an enemy connected to dark magical forces that threaten the lands Nicholas will someday rule - if he survives.

Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese. For six months things went well: He found a quaint little shop, he befriended the local lord, the village folk loved him, he found a sharp young apprentice to help out, and, best yet, he met a comely young widow with the prettiest eyes.

Eric didn't ask to be a vampire. In fact he didn't even believe in them. Biting your own tongue with your fangs does a lot of convincing. Even so, being a part-time undead isn't as easy as you might think. It can let you hold down a day job, true, but sometimes the night "life" can be more than a little difficult, what with those bloodthirsty urges and predatory instincts kicking in.

Heroic story of young men
The pace of the story is perfect, flowing from one event to another and between characters as the plots and people develop.
There is adventure, humor, sadness, and heroism. The story is a pleasant escape from life’s harsh realities.
It is not for readers looking for mystery, deep thinking, or complex interactions between plots or characters. The story is a straight forward adventure across an ocean to rescue people and save a kingdom.
It is well written with good narration and a happy ending, just what I wanted. Thank you—Feist and Joyce.

Love the books, but the narration is awful
I started reading Feist’s books thirty-five years ago and it instilled a lifelong joy of reading in me. I thought I would try the audiobooks of my favorite author. The first four Riftwar books were fantastic, but the narrator changed for Prince of the Blood and The Kings Buccaneer and I really think it’s doing a huge disservice to the story. The pronunciation of the names is off putting to say the least; Arutha (Aruta according to the narrator) and Tomas (Toe-mass) especially. The accents don’t fit the characters. Kings and princes are made to sound like like sailors and dockworkers. James of Krondor, not even close, and don’t get me started on Nakor’s voice. Nails on a chalkboard. I love the books and always will. I can’t say the same for the audiobooks.

Great story, fair to poor narration
Feist is an extraordinary story teller. He captures your attention from start to finish, just wish they had picked a better narrator.

One the Feist’s Best
Battle, sorrow, love high sea adventure, triumph. These are the aspects that make this a must listen.

the reader
hearing this man pronounce Arutha as AruTa was beyond obnoxious. my love for the story was the only thing that got me through it.
