About this listen

Norbert Oldfoot is a simple mage who makes his living traveling the Bekla River Road, selling trade goods, performing healing magic, and singing traditional songs of heroes. He becomes friends with Kerttu, a coppersmith who has developed a new alloy that is perfect for manufacturing swords.

When Kerttu is kidnapped by the evil Wizard Ludek. Kerttu’s teenage daughter Tessia, a skilled hunter, recruits three friends, including Norbert, and sets out on a quest to find a legendary dragon who lives in the mountains. With the help of the dragon, Tessia plans to save her father. Little do they know that in order to save Kerttu, they will first have to save the kingdom.

Full Disclosure - I narrated this book, its sequel and another by the author. I love Michael Simms writing. In preparing to narrate book 2, I listened through my performance of The Green Mage. Michael's characters are REAL. So much fantasy is filled with standard tropes. I enjoy those tropes, but Tessia, Norbert, and Tyrmiss are fully fleshed out, original characters. I suspect the 1 star rating given by another listener relates to Michael's 21st century sensibilities as an author. This is Not Tolkien, nor does it purport to be. Its not George Macdonald. There are not 1, but 2 same sex couples in this book. But it's not in any way central to the the plot or chracter development that they are. They just are who they are and it isn't even discussed in the book. Nor is there anything that would make this book salacious. It comes across as presenting the world as it is, even though this is a fantasy world, rather than someone's utopian fantasy world where damsel's in distress are rescued by the gallant knights.
Norbert is just a guy. People (and dragons) in this book suffer from real trauma & don't always make the best of it.
Tyrmiss' wit is delightful. She's probably about my favorite dragon I've narrated (And I've voiced quite a few).
If you are stuck in right wing neo-conservative thinking, this book... is probably going to rub you the wrong way. If you want to read a book that makes you think while taking you on an adventure and exploring the human condition, I think you'll enjoy this one. I sure loved voicing it.
