About this listen
Deadly storms have ravaged Mina’s homeland for generations. Floods sweep away entire villages, while bloody wars are waged over the few remaining resources. Her people believe the Sea God, once their protector, now curses them with death and despair. In an attempt to appease him, each year a beautiful maiden is thrown into the sea to serve as the Sea God’s bride, in the hopes that one day the “true bride” will be chosen and end the suffering.
Many believe that Shim Cheong, the most beautiful girl in the village - and the beloved of Mina’s older brother Joon - may be the legendary true bride. But on the night Cheong is to be sacrificed, Joon follows Cheong out to sea, even knowing that to interfere is a death sentence. To save her brother, Mina throws herself into the water in Cheong’s stead.
Swept away to the Spirit Realm, a magical city of lesser gods and mythical beasts, Mina seeks out the Sea God, only to find him caught in an enchanted sleep. With the help of a mysterious young man named Shin - as well as a motley crew of demons, gods, and spirits - Mina sets out to wake the Sea God and bring an end to the killer storms once and for all. But she doesn’t have much time: A human cannot live long in the land of the spirits. And there are those who would do anything to keep the Sea God from waking....

When a banished witch falls in love with the legendary trickster Loki, she risks the wrath of the gods in this moving, subversive debut novel that reimagines Norse mythology. Angrboda’s story begins where most witches' tales end: with a burning. A punishment from Odin for refusing to provide him with knowledge of the future, the fire leaves Angrboda injured and powerless, and she flees into the farthest reaches of a remote forest. There she is found by a man who reveals himself to be Loki, and her initial distrust of him transforms into a deep and abiding love.

Nahri has never believed in magic. Certainly, she has power; on the streets of 18th-century Cairo, she’s a con woman of unsurpassed talent. But she knows better than anyone that the trades she uses to get by - palm readings, zars, and a mysterious gift for healing - are all tricks, both the means to the delightful end of swindling Ottoman nobles and a reliable way to survive. But when Nahri accidentally summons Dara, an equally sly, darkly mysterious djinn warrior, to her side during one of her cons, she’s forced to reconsider her beliefs.

Story
What is the story of the dark fairy, Maleficent? Why does she curse the innocent princess? What led to her becoming so filled with malice, anger, and hatred? Many tales have tried to explain her motives. Here is one account, pulled down from the many passed down through the ages. It is a tale of love and betrayal, of magic and reveries. It is a tale of the mistress of all evil.

Story
In this gripping WWII time-slip novel from the author whose books have been called “propulsive” and a “must-read” (Publishers Weekly), Grace Tonquin is an American Quaker who works tirelessly in Vichy France to rescue Jewish children from the Nazis. After crossing the treacherous Pyrénées, Grace returns home to Oregon with a brother and sister whose parents were lost during the war. Though Grace and her husband love Élias and Marguerite as their own, echoes of Grace’s past and trauma from the Holocaust tear the Tonquin family apart.

Enchanting
An enchanting fable for all ages.
A tale of uncertainty, bravery and fate. Does date choose us, or do we choose our fate. A tale of generational love and how that love guides us . A must read

A simple pebble is polished into a pearl
This story was all I could ever have hoped for, and more. Following the tale of a young girl, Mina, whose courage & tenacity and love for her family allows her to follow her heart to overcome many challenges. Along the way she will meet many friends, allies, and enemies, gods, spirits, demons and mythical beasts. And, in her journey, she will uncover hidden plots and long forgotten secrets. Loyal of heart and true of spirit, this is the story of how the world can be saved through kindness, compassion but, most of all, love.

Book Club Selection
I literally fell in love with this book after listening to the first chapter. This narrator is top notch and literally transported you to the world beneath the sea. It was just amazing how descriptive each and everything was described. I felt like I was walking around this magical world with her. The amazing story telling was unbelievable and I hope to read more books from this author and this narrator too.

Lulling and lovely
The narrator has a very lulling voice, which fits the theme of the book but made me a bit sleepy listening to it. The story is fantastic and well written, although it takes a little bit to get into it and to keep all the characters straight. Highly recommend though.

Beautiful
A beautiful stand alone story, reminded me very much of spirited away and howls moving castle, with its own unique nature. One I will read to my kids one day and still loved as an adult now.

I’ve listened five times
What a beautifully meaningful story. The underlying meaning behind each aspect is profound and yet the lyrical and whimsical way in which the story unfolds keeps it light. The narrator’s voice and cadence lend to the airy feeling of the story to create a masterpiece I’ve listened to over and over. Some truths are best revealed through stories.

Loved the story
And the characters. The narrator is fine but not great - no different tones or accents for any characters or to indicate speech vs inner thoughts. Also I found her very London accent jarring at times. Still, I definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes folklore, fairytales, and myths!
