From the #1 New York Times bestselling author Leigh Bardugo comes a spellbinding novel set in the Spanish Golden Age.
“A must-read for those who are seeking a little magic in their lives.”—Deborah Harkness, #1 bestselling author of A Discovery of Witches
In a shabby house, on a shabby street, in the new capital of Madrid, Luzia Cotado uses scraps of magic to get through her days of endless toil as a scullion. But when her scheming mistress discovers the lump of a servant cowering in the kitchen is actually hiding a talent for little miracles, she demands Luzia use those gifts to improve the family's social position.
What begins as simple amusement for the nobility takes a perilous turn when Luzia garners the notice of Antonio Pérez, the disgraced secretary to Spain's king. Still reeling from the defeat of his armada, the king is desperate for any advantage in the war against England's heretic queen—and Pérez will stop at nothing to regain the king's favor.
Determined to seize this one chance to better her fortunes, Luzia plunges into a world of seers and alchemists, holy men and hucksters, where the lines between magic, science, and fraud are never certain. But as her notoriety grows, so does the danger that her Jewish blood will doom her to the Inquisition's wrath. She will have to use every bit of her wit and will to survive—even if that means enlisting the help of Guillén Santángel, an embittered immortal familiar whose own secrets could prove deadly for them both.

Sancia Grado is a thief, and a damn good one. And her latest target, a heavily guarded warehouse on Tevanne’s docks, is nothing her unique abilities can’t handle. But unbeknownst to her, Sancia’s been sent to steal an artifact of unimaginable power, an object that could revolutionize the magical technology known as scriving. The Merchant Houses who control this magic - the art of using coded commands to imbue everyday objects with sentience - have already used it to transform Tevanne into a vast, remorseless capitalist machine.

Story
A gifted young knight named Collum arrives at Camelot to compete for a place at the Round Table, only to find that he’s too late. King Arthur died two weeks ago at the Battle of Camlann, and only a handful of the knights of the Round Table are left. The survivors aren’t the heroes of legend like Lancelot or Gawain. They’re the oddballs of the Round Table, like Sir Palomides, the Saracen Knight, and Sir Dagonet, Arthur’s fool, who was knighted as a joke. They’re joined by Nimue, who was Merlin’s apprentice until she turned on him and buried him under a hill.

A beautifully crafted, enriching saga inspired by East Asian mythology, The Melancholy of Untold History is Minsoo Kang’s debut novel, steeped in history like R.F. Kuang’s Babel, epic in scope like Anthony Doerr’s Cloud Cuckoo Land, and lyrically exciting like David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas, interweaving four complex yet entertaining stories as they shape and create a nation’s literary narrative through the themes of love and grief.

Story
Cordelia knows her mother is . . . unusual. Their house doesn’t have any doors between rooms—there are no secrets in this house—and her mother doesn't allow Cordelia to have a single friend. Unless you count Falada, her mother's beautiful white horse. The only time Cordelia feels truly free is on her daily rides with him. But more than simple eccentricity sets her mother apart. Other mothers don’t force their daughters to be silent and motionless for hours, sometimes days, on end. Other mothers aren’t sorcerers.

Story
Some stories take more than one lifetime to tell. There are wrongs that echo through the ages, friendships that outpace the claws of death, loves that leave their mark on civilization, and promises that nothing can break. This is one such story. Annelid and Leveret met as children in the middle of the Sri Lankan civil war. They found each other in a torn-up nation, peering through propaganda to grasp a deeper truth. And in a demon-haunted wood, another act of violence linked them and propelled their souls on a journey throughout the ages.

Story
Opal is a lot of things—orphan, high school dropout, full-time cynic and part-time cashier—but above all, she's a determined to find a better life for her younger brother Jasper. One that gets them out of Eden, Kentucky, a town remarkable for only two things: bad luck and E. Starling, the reclusive nineteenth century author of The Underland, who disappeared over a hundred years ago. All she left behind were dark rumors—and her home. Everyone agrees that it’s best to ignore the uncanny mansion and its misanthropic heir, Arthur. Almost everyone, anyway.

It was really good
I really liked this book. Did I love it, no. Was it a bad book? Absolutely not! I there a couple in this book? Yes! But I would not call it romantic, more like there is a couple that comes together. There is a lot to this book as in history. There is magic but it's more like small miracles. Do I recommend you read this? Yes, yes I do.

Unfortunately underwhelmed.
The familiar was just that; a familiar and sometimes laborious trek down a well marked path. I kept waiting for the plot to thicken and for use to move past the obvious parts of the story but we never did. This experience was redeemed by the soothing voice of the narrator. Her voice was lovely. But as the writing was a bit monotone and the plot points easy to dismiss as filler…the lack of distinction between the main three female leads voiced by the narrator was confusing specifically due to the lack of character development and differentiation created by the author.
I made myself finish this blaming my own attention span. But the track ends up where one would expect. The details as well as the characters were forgettable.

Another instant classic
Leigh does this again we don't even need to wait for books to be released to buy them we go ahead and pre order always sure that she will continue to deliver another great story. I was waiting and waiting for that end and once again you did amazing! I by the way wouldn't mind getting more stories on the multiple characters. Great combination on languages within the story and narrator does it justice. Luzia & Santangel are just great protagonists to this story thanks to Leigh.

A different kind of magical story
I loved this book! Sometimes I’d have to stop and think ‘who’s who’ since their names aren’t common. This book kept me wanting to listen more and I loved the ending. Narrating all the different characters was excellent. Highly recommend

Solid Romance & Characters, But Typical Plot
The characters were likable and multi-dimensional. Luzia's romance arc was believable and made me feel all aflutter. And the choice of character background (secret Jew during Spanish inquisition heyday) was interesting and fresh. But overall the book was pretty forgettable - kind of a rehashed plot line (poor girl with exceptional powers saved from life of drudgery; magical tournament to become royal servant).
While Luzia was a solid character, I wish we could have dug deeper into the stories of other far more interesting-sounding characters like Hualite (the aunt), Luzia's mother, Valentina (Luzia's employer), and Santángel (the lover).

Surprisingly Dissapointing
I absolutely adore Ninth House and Hell Bent, so I was naturally a bit sad when we got news that book 3 wasn’t coming this year, and a standalone would instead. However, I was hopeful that it would be just as magical and enjoyable. Unfortunately, I did not enjoy it hardly at all. I think that I went into it expecting the usual type of story of Leigh Bardugo, which I think might be my own fault, because I actually didn’t enjoy the Shadow & Bone trilogy that much either. (I know I need to read Six of Crows.. it’s on my TBR lol)
I can understand and appreciate that authors don’t want to write the same kind of story over and over again, and I appreciate that this book did sort of fall into the same magical realism vein of Ninth House and Hell Bent. But it seemed as though this book was planned to be a historical fiction and was only greenlighted if there was magic thrown in.
