About this listen
The time is the distant future. Earth has been rendered uninhabitable by terrible storms during which its only city, Center, constructed around a natural cave system, is sealed from the outside. Mischa, a young thief whose capabilities are enhanced by hereditary mutation, is trying to escape with her drug addicted brother from the dominance of her uncle. When a starship arrives, commanded by the twin alien pseudo-sibs, Subone & Subtwo, Mischa seizes her chance. All goes well until Subone, in a moment of cruelty, lures Mischa's brother into a fight, killing him. Mischa exacts her revenge, but then has to flee the wrath of the aliens and take refuge back in the deep caves underneath the city.

Ensign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to pick up on the facts that (1) every Away Mission involves some kind of lethal confrontation with alien forces; (2) the ship’s captain, its chief science officer, and the handsome Lieutenant Kerensky always survive these confrontations; and (3) at least one low-ranked crew member is, sadly, always killed.

The girl knows she has a destiny before she even knows her name. She grows up in the wild, in a cave with her mother, but visions of a faraway lake come to her on the spring breeze, and when she hears a traveler speak of Artos, king of Caer Leon, she knows that her future lies at his court. The sun is bloated, diseased, dying perhaps. Beneath its baneful light, Shadrapar, last of all cities, harbours fewer than 100,000 human souls. Built on the ruins of countless civilisations, Shadrapar is a museum, a midden, an asylum, a prison on a world that is ever more alien to humanity. Bearing witness to the desperate struggle for existence between life old and new is Stefan Advani: rebel, outlaw, prisoner, survivor.

Here are delightful upendings of genre clichés and heartfelt revitalizations of classic tropes. Here is social commentary with teeth, and here are scenes of pants-wettingly funny comedy. Here are characters and situations that by their very outrageousness achieve a heightened realism unlike any other. And here is one of the strongest voices in modern science fiction, the writer called by Andrew Sean Greer “this generation’s Le Guin”.

Editorial reviews
Narrator Ray Chase infuses the feeling of a grand epic into her performance of this story set in a future Earth rendered uninhabitable by dangerous storms. Listeners will be quickly caught up by Chase's careful attention to bringing out the details of this world as young thief Mischa tries to escape from her uncle with her drug-addicted brother. When two alien clones arrive, Mischa befriends them in the hopes that they will take her and her brother to space. But when things take a dangerous turn, Mischa is left with desperate choices, and refuge in the deep caves underneath the city may be her only hope.

THIS is Science Fiction
After reading and listening to Dreamsnake so many times I have practically memorized it, I was delighted to find a robust novel set in the same uniquely imagined world. This time the place is the underground city on the demolished and devastated Earth. The characters are compelling, the adventure plot is perfectly paced. I have listened three times already, and only wish McIntyre still lived among us so I could beg for another novel in this vein! Thank you with all my heart and respect, Vonda Neel McIntyre, for advancing the acceptance of female SF authors.

I still love this book
. . . but not the reading of it so much. I first read this in the 70's and it haunted me almost as much as 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. it seems the Audible reader was trying to make it more dramatic, but it's not what this story needs. Graeme Malcolm would have been the perfect reader for The Exile Waiting..
