About this listen
Death walks beside me.
Two weeks ago, I was hired by the Dragon Prince of Zaru to help his brother, the King, deal with their dead. Not that there is an abundance of corpses in their kingdom, but those who die aren't staying in their graves. As a necromancer, I'm one of the few people on Serai who can put the dead to rest and discover why they are rising. As a Raltven, I'm particularly good at it. Good enough that the King of Zaru sent his brother across the sea to find someone like me.
At first sight, desire sparked between Prince Racmar and me. On the way to Zaru, our attraction for each other had grown. Now it's reached the point of combustion, but I want more than a single night of pleasure from the Prince. To win him, I must play a dangerous game, tantalizing the man without riling the beast inside him. Between Racmar and the dead, I have some serious work to do, and both are presenting unforeseen complications. The reanimated corpses aren't talking, something both unusual and unfortunate for my investigation. Then there is Prince Racmar who speaks too much, and his words are clawing at my resistance. I don't know who will break first—the unknown power behind the dead, the Dragon Prince, or me.
Death walks beside us Raltven, in our shadow form we are akin to spirits, but if I'm not careful, a spirit is exactly what I will become.

Can I survive loving a god? For as long as I can remember, and even further back than that, the Dragons of Serai have worshiped a goddess and only her. But everything has changed. A god has risen. He has returned long-lost magic to my people and balanced the Fire within us. Those who could, made the journey to Ha'tezan, where the God's temple was unearthed. I am fortunate enough to be one of those Dragons. Shortly after my arrival, Karadas, the Dragon God of the Moon and Water, demanded a sacrifice—a man willing to give himself completely to our god and serve him in every way. Although ...

A broken heart sent me running right into his arms. I live in a world of magic, but I'm a man of science. Nothing thrills me more than learning, be it a new language, culture, or the way something works. That is, until I fell for the Dragon Prince of Zaru. After he mated another man, I found myself listless, searching for something to ease the heartache. So when the offer of an archaeological job in Ha'tezan came to me, I accepted it instantly. I didn't ask what it paid or who was hiring me; I didn't care. I just needed to get out of Zaru. My employer is a king—King Xa'din of Ha'tezan. At...

Story
I've spent most of my very long life an outcast. Driven out of my home and dread by my mother, I wandered the seas of Serai until the Dragon God, the source of the Sea Dragons' magic, was trapped by the Dragon Goddess. Without a connection to Karadas, my kind were forced into hibernation. All but me. Because I'm different. I have more Fire in me than other Sea Dragons, enough to make me something else. I avoided hibernation, but without my Water magic, I couldn't survive in the sea. I left the water and didn't return for centuries, not until the Dragon God was freed and the Sea Dragons woke...

Unique story
I liked this story much more than the first in the series. I really liked how the drama wasn't wrapped up neatly. It made it much more realistic and believable. It poses some real life, thought provoking scenarios about racism and inter racial dating.
The virtual voice is pretty good for what it is. I didn't mind it so much so that I listened to this, the second in the series, and plan to continue to listen.
There are some occasionally wonky voice parts. but the that detract too much from the story.

"Not so submissive" subs!!
Do not let the virtual voice deter you from listening to this series, it is definitely worth the listen.
Finally, one of a few series that have strong submissives that do not put up with b*******. I love the characters in this series. One thing that makes this series so great is the "submissives" (bottoms) are not willing to forego their values and self-worth for their mates. it is very refreshing to see in a series.
Can't wait to listen to the rest of this series.

Excellent plot and virtual voice was good.
This is my second review for this author and series and just like the first book I was sceptical at first about the virtual voice and then quickly pleasantly impressed. I had a highschool physics teacher that was more monotone and inflectionless than this virtual voice. It's not perfect and can get a little confusing where there is dialogue between two different characters. And it obviously doesn't perform the emotional scenes but it was impressive for a virtual voice.
The story was well written, planned out, and left me with all the happy feelings and determination to seek out the next book. Thank you so much!
This book featured a lot of racial issues that antagonized the budding relationship. It was well written to really make you think. My personal opinion when I read fantasy with an HEA is to avoid that kind of real life drama, but it was so well written I had to listen until the end.

Good, once you get used to the voice
First, the elephant in the room: this is recorded with a computer voice. For what it's worth, it's not bad. However, it's not great. Once you get used to it, you can get through it without paying it much attention. The story for what it's worth is entertaining and steamy. I like that the necromancer is willing to be a necromancer and use necromancy as part of the plot. The world building is decent and the underlying racism that exists is believable. Perhaps my favorite part is that there is no actual good guys or bad guys. Everyone did something shitty and is still doing shitty things. It's a good example of how a bad thing can snowball into a terrible thing, and continue to grow, especially when it's ignored for "the greater good". The main characters are generic tropes but still likable. All in all, I'd recommend this if you can get past the computer voice. It's a fun afternoon listen.

Made it halfway
I was only able to make it halfway through this audiobook. The AI/virtual voice had some pronunciation issues, but it didn’t detract too much from the story.
The story itself is the problem for me. It’s centered around MC (main character) getting r*ped by ML (male lead/love interest/dragon prince). No matter how many times MC says “no,” the prince doesn’t respect him enough to stop. There were dozens of instances of this throughout the book, making it thoroughly unenjoyable for me.
The book in general could have been great. The plot sounds interesting and it aligns with my favorite genres, but neither of the main characters are likable in any fashion (to me).
The book also tries to have a “racism is bad” thing going for it, which is fair—racism IS bad. Racism doesn’t have a place in society. Yet when the main character finally “allows” the prince to be intimate with him, he knows that the prince is still racist. He spent half the book acting like racism against his people bothered him, and then chose to be intimate with someone who shares those beliefs—something he said he wouldn’t do.
Anyway, I DNF this. 4 hours was enough. I usually don’t leave reviews, but this was just… not great.
