About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin
Now a major TV series directed by Brian Kirk and starring Eddie Redmayne!
One of the most celebrated thrillers ever written, The Day of the Jackal is the exhilarating story of the struggle to catch a killer before it's too late.
1963. An anonymous Englishman is hired by the Operations Chief of French terrorist organisation O.A.S. to murder the French president, General Charles de Gaulle. A failed attempt in the previous year means the target will be nearly impossible to reach.
Only one man could do the job: an assassin of legendary talent known only as The Jackal.
This remorseless and deadly killer must be stopped. But he is a man without a name, without an identity; a lethal spectre.
How can you stop an assassin nobody can identify? The task falls to the best detective in France - and the price of failure is unthinkable . . .
'As gripping now as it was 50 years ago' THE TIMES
'Masterful suspense . . . The Day of the Jackal changed the shape of popular fiction from the moment it was finished' BEN MACINTYRE
'In a class by itself. Unputdownable' SUNDAY TIMES

Story
Attorney Calvin Dexter hangs his shingle in a quiet New Jersey town, has a reasonably successful practice, and takes the hills strong while triathlon training. But Dexter is no ordinary lawyer. On Sundays, he reads the paper and shuffles around his dark, empty house, trying to forget about a life he has lost forever. Until, of course, Dexter reads something in the papers that sends him the necessary signal. Until one of the handful who know of Dexter's other life tries to contact him. Worth every letter of its fame
Where does The Day of the Jackal rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Top 3
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Day of the Jackal?
Almost every moment. The meticulous planning, the plotting, the detail and never one dull moment. Reason I took so long to finish it is I kept rewinding so I wouldn't miss a single word
Have you listened to any of David Rintoul’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Not yet but I will
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Obviously when he was cornered in the end. You root for him the bad guy so much that you want him to succeed so much in his wicked mission
Any additional comments?
I recommend this book to anyone looking to bury themselves in a good well written and narrated story. I will read this book again.

Brilliant classic. Well written,well read.
Superb. From start to finish, excellent. Gripping, with a small seam of humour running through. Excellent narration, with just enough subtle voices to give life to the various characters within.

The best thriller I’ve ever read other than Ludlum. This is the most amazing story I’ve read.

Great story... Narration can be a problem
The story is great, period. The problem of this audiobook is the narration. The voice goes up and down in volume and it's impossible to find the right balance if you are not listening to the book in a quiet space. You put the volume high and you can get deaf when the narrator decides to increase the voice. I like his voice but someone should have told him to try to speak in a more regular volume to avoid these problems.

Best thriller ever!
Well written, well paced, great characters, great story, great descriptions. In a class by itself. Do not miss! My only complaint is the subpar performance.

As good as, if not better, than the movie.
I love reading Frederick Forsythe and listening to one of his books was a real treat. It was well narrated and spell binding. It kept me on the edge right to the end.

great thriller
narrator whispers a lot which makes it difficult to listen to without headphones, because you'll constantly have to adjust the volume.
