About this listen

The Dark Trail

FBI Profiler Special Agent Sean Kruger is called back to the FBI from his special task force when his long-time friend and current Deputy Director of the FBI, Alan Seltzer, is brutally murdered during his morning bike ride. As Kruger is thrown into the investigation, he quickly finds out Alan was not the first high-profile African American to die in a suspicious manner.

Now with the loss of his friend and his pending retirement on his 57th birthday, Kruger must endure a dark trail as he rushes to find Alan's murderer before he is forced to leave the FBI.

Filled with the trademark twists and turns of a J.C. Fields thriller, The Dark Trail will keep you listening well past your bedtime.

JC Fields and Paul J McSorley continue to entertain with the gripping story involving the FBI Sean Kruger character!

Good book - will keep your attention!

Fan of the series. However, the conversation around retirement has happened in EVERY book and the epitome of a “broken record”.

I really enjoy the Sean Kruger books, it keeps my interest and I like that a lot of same characters are in each book. The Dark Trail was as great as the other books in this series, can’t wait to listen to next one in line.

Love this series of books!!

The Sean Kruger series should not be overlooked. This is book six. It can be listened to as a stand alone but I would listen to the series in order. I think the character development can be appreciated much more.
In this book the Deputy Director of the FBI and close friend is murdered, Kruger is called in. The Director has been planning to call him anyway. It seems there is a very intelligent serial killer moving across the states murdering prominent people. The victims are all either African American, Chinese or Jewish. Just so happens the Director was African American as well. It’s a race for Kruger who is rapidly approaching mandatory retirement age and wants to find this killer.
This is a fast paced story. The characters are likable, believable and well developed.
Paul J. McSorley’s narration is outstanding.
This book has my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.

great stories, characters and narration

I just finished book 6 in the Sean Kruger series and I am truly saddened. I love the plots, stories, excitement, twists, turns and more in the series. But what I love even more are the main characters and supporting characters. Until Mr. Fields writes more in this series, I feel at a lost as to what I can listen to next, because I fear I won't find something that has given me so much pleasure as the Sean Kruger series.

The way book 6 ends indicates Mr. Fields has left himself in a great position to continue this series, far beyond a book 7. Sean has a request from Paul Stumpf to find a key Russian character. There are lots of loose ends regarding money and corruption of US elections and politicians and the money and influence is coming from the oligarch in the Kremlin (my words.) That Kremlin character is never referred to by name or title, but we know who he is. In real life, he is not only dangerously and ruthlessly powerful, but he controls wealth far beyond the likes of Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates and Warren Buffet.

Beyond this last request from Mr. Stumpf, Sean Kruger has an opportunity to work in private with the team he has surrounded himself with. Robert Crais has written a long series based on 2 key characters, Joe Pike & Elvis Cole. Michael Connelly has done the same with Harry Bosch, his step brother Mickey Haller, and possibly Bosch's daughter, Maddie Bosch. Lee Child has done the same with Jack Reacher. Mr. Fields has the unique opportunity to continue the Sean Kruger series far into the future.

I will go one step further. Michael Connelly has produced a 6 season series in conjunction with Amazon called "Bosch", based on Mr. Connelly's novels. I've read every book Mr. Connelly has written and I am in the middle of watching season 6 of Bosch. It's really good! However, I sincerely believe that Mr. Fields could easily turn the Sean Kruger series into a supremely great TV program, hopefully on Amazon or Netflix, and it has the potential to be better than "Bosch." Who should play Sean? JR? Stephanie? Gibbs? Knowle? Mia? Paul? Alan? I need to think about that, but I think it would require that Morgan Freeman play the esteemed Joseph!

Final note: Mr. Paul McSorley is the perfect narrator for this series!

I'm sad!

I am a huge Sean Kruger fan. I like his style, his understated competence, and his ability to problem solve. The supporting cast is also top notch, and they all are very well-developed characters (imho, character development is the most important part of any story/book/movie).
McSorley is excellent as usual. All in all, another quality installment.

Well done again
