About this listen
The world is an amazing place and part of its beauty is in the different ecosystems. From the tundra, to the mountains, to the desert there are a multitude of different plants and animals that call these places home. One type of plant commonly found in parks and open areas where people might picnic are edible wild plants. This article will not only discuss what makes these plants edible but also give some tips for finding them among all their lookalikes!
Edible wild plants encompass a wide variety of plant species from all over world, many with roots as deep in history as humanity itself. These plants have been used for food, medicine and various cultures throughout history that's why when you see an edible wild plant you are certain it is going to be good to eat.
So what makes an edible wild plant good for eating? There are many factors that make a plant edible. The most important factor would have to be its nutrition content, as any good cook would agree. Good nutrition will help your body in many ways and is essential as we age or if we are sick. If you look at the nutritional data of the different plants I will discuss, you may notice a common theme. They all share similar nutritional values and give your body more energy than the more simple sugars found in processed foods.
Another important factor is the taste of the plant. Some taste better than others, but all have a similar flavor to them. This may be why many vegetables look so similar, like two peas in a pod! Edible wild plants can easily be mistaken for their poisonous lookalikes (often called lookalike plants) which are toxic and dangerous if eaten. Lookalike plants look the same and some even have similar names to the edible wild plant species, which is why I will point out many of these lookalikes as well.
