About this listen

“If you've been looking for something different to level up your health, fitness, and personal growth, this is it.” (Melissa Urban, Whole30 CEO and New York Times best-selling author)

Discover the evolutionary mind and body benefits of living at the edges of your comfort zone and reconnecting with the wild.

In many ways, we’re more comfortable than ever before. But could our sheltered, temperature-controlled, overfed, underchallenged lives actually be the leading cause of many our most urgent physical and mental health issues? In this gripping investigation, award-winning journalist Michael Easter seeks out off-the-grid visionaries, disruptive genius researchers, and mind-body conditioning trailblazers who are unlocking the life-enhancing secrets of a counterintuitive solution: discomfort.

Easter’s journey to understand our evolutionary need to be challenged takes him to meet the NBA’s top exercise scientist, who uses an ancient Japanese practice to build championship athletes; to the mystical country of Bhutan, where an Oxford economist and Buddhist leader are showing the world what death can teach us about happiness; to the outdoor lab of a young neuroscientist who’s found that nature tests our physical and mental endurance in ways that expand creativity while taming burnout and anxiety; to the remote Alaskan backcountry on a demanding 33-day hunting expedition to experience the rewilding secrets of one of the last rugged places on Earth; and more.

Along the way, Easter uncovers a blueprint for leveraging the power of discomfort that will dramatically improve our health and happiness, and perhaps even help us understand what it means to be human. The Comfort Crisis is a bold call to break out of your comfort zone and explore the wild within yourself.

Critic reviews

“Changes the way we think about the modern world and how everyday conveniences are eroding our understanding of what it mean to be human.” (Richard Dorment, editor in chief, Men’s Health)

“I read The Comfort Crisis in three straight sittings and was so motivated and inspired that I immediately made changes to my daily routines. Two months later, I've never been fitter, more self-confident, or happier. If you've been looking for something different to level up your health, fitness, and personal growth, THIS IS IT.” (Melissa Urban, Whole30 CEO and six-time New York Times best-selling author)

“Entertaining and enlightening, Easter’s quest for a ‘rewilded’ diet, creative boredom, and other sensation - restoring discomforts is chock-full of solid science as well as a rollicking adventure.” (Dan Fagin, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Toms River: A Story of Science and Salvation)

There is everything worthwhile imaginable to listen to in this book, and not a second is wasting our time when listening to it. Been waiting almost a year for this to be released and it was waaayyy too long of a wait. Part Storytelling and part advice giving, yet they mesh together so well. I have already immediately started implementing the recommendations he gave and my life will be forever changed for the better because of this.

Best audiobook I have ever listened to!

This book made me think. I have been reflecting on life and what takes my time and focus. I love books that talk through issues and problems, but also give some ideas on how to make it better. There are several concrete things that I am going to use in my life starting now. Great ideas and thoughts to discuss with my kids. I will be reading this book again.

Excellent book with great ideas

The book was great. No question about it. You should buy it.

I’ve already recommended it to 5 people and counting.

Michael should not have read it though. I could not get past his inflection when citing a source or quoting someone/ something he referenced. Every time he says “said so and so” or “say some group of researchers” to end a sentence, it sounds like he’s asking a question because of the inflection in his voice. Drove me mad.

I can tell he put A LOT of work into this book and this reading. Every part of the story and book is A+++. Just not the reading / performance.

Great book - should’ve had someone else read it though.

Part auto-biographical adventure part research, this book is a masterpiece. Easter's storytelling is compelling and the information this book contains has never been more relevant. I was captivated by Easter's hunt and I loved every second of the ideas and data he presents.

The author is the narrator and I wouldn't say he would win a dramatic reading contest, but there is always something special about authors reading their own work (unless they are mind numbingly dull).

Overall the audio book is outstanding, compelling, and even as a woman I found most of it relatable. I feel inspired after finishing it and I will keep it in mind whenever I need a kick in the butt to forge ahead on my wellness goals.

I am so grateful for GORUCK TRIBE for many reasons but these books they have for monthly reading...I would have never heard of most of them otherwise. The Comfort Crisis should be required reading for absolutely everyone. Not only extremely well narrated but somewhat of a "cliff hanger" the way it plays out. Add the incredible amount of factual information and life experiences of the author - I could not stop listening. I will read it again, just ordered the hard cover. Damn good writing and narrating. Thank you for writing this book and sharing so much!

INCREDIBLE - SHOULD BE REQUIRED READING

Loved every minute. Captivating.Had no idea I would learn so much. I got sober 27 years ago and began a similar life in a whitewater kayak and mountain bike and gym. Still live the life, but I am now even more excited about pushing further. Highly recommend.
