About this listen

Widow Theodosia Cecil needs a husband to help protect her son. The former flower seller turned estate owner posts an ad in the newspaper, and no one is more surprised than she when her first love, the man she thought dead, reappears.

Ewan Fitzwilliam has been at war for six years. Now, the second son of a powerful earl is back, but his beloved Theo needs a husband and will not consider him. She believes Ewan left her - in desperate straits - so she denies the feelings she still harbors for the handsome, scarred soldier. Theo and playwright Ewan must overcome bitter lies and vengeful actions that ruined their youthful affair. Theo must reveal her deepest secret in order to reclaim the love that has long been denied.

Contains mature themes.

Loved the story and the angst of it all. Second chances and all are pretty typical. I enjoyed the telling of the realities of navigating being the “other” of that time, and the courage of the women to just “be” despite the casual cruelties of society. This story is told infrequently enough to make this telling feel special.

The story line kept me excited to get back to find out what happens next. Loved the development of the main characters, with insight on what influences led them to each stage. Lovely from beginning to end. the antagonist was easy to hate, with some unexpected revelations. How many things can go wrong before love is lost forever?
It's hard to enjoy in the beginning because of the narration, but I'm glad I pushed through. once I was invested it was all worth it.

Cost of never giving up on love

The narrator was hard to listen to. He accent wasn’t great and her pauses didn’t make sense but the story was beautiful enough that I may try again with a different book from the author

Great story!

It's a testament to the author that this was still so enjoyable despite the wooden delivery of the reader. I actually thought it was AI at first.
