Story
In Free to Learn, developmental psychologist Peter Gray argues that our children, if free to pursue their own interests through play, will not only learn all they need to know but will do so with energy and passion. Children come into this world burning to learn, equipped with the curiosity, playfulness, and sociability to direct their own education. Yet we have squelched such instincts in a school model originally developed to indoctrinate, not to promote intellectual growth.

Story
In this eye-opening account, Cal Newport debunks the long-held belief that "follow your passion" is good advice. Not only is the cliché flawed - preexisting passions are rare and have little to do with how most people end up loving their work - but it can also be dangerous, leading to anxiety and chronic job hopping. After making his case against passion, Newport sets out on a quest to discover the reality of how people end up loving what they do.

Bringing his audacious and persuasive thesis to life, Gartner offers case histories of some famous Americans who represent this phenomenon of hypomania. These are the real stories you never learned in school about some of those men who made America: Columbus, who discovered the continent, thought he was the messiah. John Winthrop, who settled and defined it, believed Americans were God's new chosen people. Alexander Hamilton, the indispensable founder who envisioned America's economic future, self-destructed because of pride and impulsive behavior.

Soon after he opened his vineyard for business many years ago, the Wealthy Gardener noticed a puzzling fact. Everyone wanted money, but only a few people managed to accumulate it. The reason, he realized, is that most people focus on short-term gains instead of achieving lasting wealth. As he grew old and aware of his dwindling time on this Earth, the Wealthy Gardener began to share his hard-earned wisdom with the financially troubled in his community, patiently mentoring those who asked for his practical advice on the ways of prosperity.

Very Controversial
I have been enlightened in some way, and also challenged by the idea in this book. Yes I know there are something wrong or loophole about education in general that don't meet our modern reality.
I love to listen a few times to grab more about this book.

Must Read!
Great book, for people of all ages. Perfectly tows the line between motivational and practical without being too verbose. Just what you would want out of great self-improvement literature. My only wish is that someone would have put this in my hand earlier in my life.

Great content - proper lenght.
It nails it just right. Gives a ton of useful and specific advice on how to succeed in turning ourselves into self-directed learners.
It achieves this thru some really concise statements and proper-lenght examples

Fantastic!
I can't wait to listen to this again and again. This is a short audio but has many motivational pieces throughout. It is just what I needed as I guide my oldest though self-directed homeschool in the high school years. Also inspired me to keep up in my passions.

Already a self learner? This is only a refresher
Some content was mundane. Other content a good reminder on how to self learn. I didn't learn anything new. So if you already self learn, you could skip this book.
