About this listen

I don't want to be a princess . . . I want to fight too.

Bazel: All my life I've been treated with kid gloves, and I'm tired of it. I want to live up to the legacy of the proud Drixonian females with which I share half of my DNA. There's one thing in my way—a young warrior who knows my secret and threatens to tell my father. So I make a deal with him, and soon his annoying presence at my side changes into something more . . .

Trapt: From the first moment I see Bazel, my entire world changes. The sun rises and sets with her. I can never be her equal—her father would never allow it—but I'll do what I can to keep her safe from the enemies closing around our borders. Even if that means teaching her everything I know. Even if that means risking everything.

Contains mature themes.

I love this series. Each one is well written, each plot is meticulously executed and planned. Each book could stand on their own but I couldn’t stop with one. I had to have the whole collection! Each narrative was excellent and by the end of the series I felt like I was friends with all the characters!!! WELL DONE!!!!

Narration Type: Dual Narration

The Hero: Trapt - he was a Drixorian and was outcast until the outcasts were welcomed back into the fold. Outcasts used to be ashamed because their fathers were deserters during the Drixonian war with the Uldani. Though now, they were no longer considered outcasts. Trapt had been ill after being neary killed when the Jocktals had invaded his remote cam and was in the infirmary when he met Bazel who had been helping out. He swore when he saw her smile, that he would do everything in his power to keep her smiling for the rest of her life. Since he’d been nearly killed, he had been prone to quiet times.

The heroine: Bazel - Trapt was her best friend since he was in the infirmary after he was injured. She often traveled to his small village. Bazel was the youngest of the adult Drixonians and the oldest of the new Drixonian/Human hybrids. Trapt was closer to his age than most everyone else which was why she spent so much time with him. Though her parents didn’t know how often she sneaked off to his village to spend time with him.

The Story: One day as Bazel and Trapt were out in the forest they came across some Jocktal tracks and everyone in Trapt’s clavasse were outraged that Bazel was in danger. She was escorted back to the city of Granite where she lived and was told that her father would be told if she snuck back to the village. Trapt was told he should discourage Bazel from hanging out with him. Though she was twenty and had grown to adulthood at thirteen, she was still often treated like one of the chits. Her job was taking care of all the other chits, and though she liked her job, she didn’t love it and hated the fact that she wasn’t allowed to come and go as she pleased, that she couldn’t fight and be a warrior.

Bazel set up a small training ground for herself and started to train herself as a warrior. She didn’t want to be helpless. She wanted to be able to defend herself and others if needed. One day, while Bazel was training, Trapt found her there and asked what in the heck she thought she was doing. She tells him the pressure of being the representative of the future of the Drixonians gets to her and she just wants to be herself.

This setup has so much emotional depth and layered conflict! Trapt’s quiet resilience and devotion to Bazel contrast beautifully with her frustration and determination to carve her own path. The societal expectations weighing on both of them—Trapt’s past as an outcast and Bazel being the symbol of the future—add great tension to their relationship.

The moment Trapt finds her training is particularly strong. It’s not just about her wanting independence; it’s about reclaiming control over her own life when everyone sees her as something greater than herself. Their bond, rooted in friendship and quiet understanding, especially as Trapt ultimately responds to her desire to train by encouraging her, despite the risk, even though he hesitates because he fears for her safety. This dynamic has the potential for deep emotional payoff, which is why I was glad at how it worked out.

This audiobook was narrated from multiple perspectives, done in dual narration by Gabriel McKnight and Reagan West. Reagan West is a terrific narrator and is fast becoming one of my favorite female narrators. She has a great voice and is very expressive, she also sounds fairly young. There is nothing I hate more than narrators that sound way too old for the characters. Gabriel Mcknight is also very good. He has a nice, deep voice which is perfect for alien romance.
