About this listen
That's Mental breaks down myths and misconceptions about what it means to be a millennial with mental illness in a darkly funny, but relatable way. In her new book, Rosenberg addresses the overlooked and offbeat issues of mental illness, shedding light on topics that are off limits, uncomfortable, or just downright embarrassing. This book details every challenging and awkward stage of Amanda's journey with mental illness and how she manages what she calls her "garden variety crazy."
"I'm writing this book because it's important, because people need a laugh, and because it's the book I wish I'd read before I lost my entire mind," explains Rosenberg. "It's everything that drives me crazy about being crazy," she says.
Rosenberg hopes her book stands to be a voice for millenials, a generation who, for the most part, are overworked, underpaid, and yet broadly labeled as spoiled brats. This candid and deeply revealing look into mental illness is filled with confessional essays about the inappropriate, devastating, and strangely amusing side to being mentally ill.

Story
Samantha Irby’s career has taken her to new heights. She dodges calls from Hollywood and flop sweats on the red carpet at premieres (well, one premiere). But nothing is ever as it seems online, where she can crop out all the ugly parts. Irby got a lot of weird emails about Carrie Bradshaw, and not only is there diarrhea to avoid, but now—anaphylactic shock. She is turned away from restaurants for being inappropriately dressed and looks for the best ways to cope, i.e., reveling in the offerings of QVC and adopting a deranged pandemic dog.

Instead of asking us to ignore the very real obstacles and societal pressures that stand between women and well-being, they explain with compassion and optimism what we’re up against - and teach us how to fight back.

Funny & thoughtful, with a wonderful performance
Amanda's funny even when you can't hear her, but the addition of her narration makes the jokes land harder & the thoughtful bits thinker. It's a wonderful book—certainly funnier than any other on the subject—and if you've suffered any kind of mental illness at all, or know someone who has (you do!), get this book ASAP!

MUST READ!!
I never write reviews but I honestly think there are few people who wouldn’t benefit from listening to this book! By far the most genuine and useful mental health resource I’ve come across, including those written by mental health professionals. Such a refreshingly candid firsthand account of life with mental illness, but I believe this author is a cut above by weaving in so much useful advice (with very frequent reminders that she is not a professional and everyone should find what works for themselves), including several references to a variety of online and phone hotlines and support resources. I think anyone suffering from ANY mental illness or who has a loved one who does would get so much from this book. I’ve never heard such relatable ways of describing depression and anxiety, effects of medications, and just overall trying to deal with life. Great author, content, and performance (5/5).

I've spoken constantly of this book from the moment I started listening to it. I empathize in ways I didn't know I could and have grown (at least a bit less lonely) from reading it.
Hearing it in the author's voice made her feel like my friend was sharing this with me.
Highly recommend.
