About this listen

William Kent Krueger is a New York Times best-selling author whose popular Cork O’Connor mysteries display an "intimate knowledge of Minnesota’s northern reaches and respect for Native American life" (Publishers Weekly). In Tamarack County, former sheriff Cork O'Connor investigates the disappearance of a retired judge’s wife - and discovers the bloody aftermath of a 20-year-old crime.

I loved everything about the book. The only thing I thought was a little funny was when the narrator try to talk like the character with a speech impediment. I realize there was a reason for it, but it made me giggle.

Another fabulous Cork O’Connor

A wonderful storyteller, loving glimpse into indigent people as well as other citizens of small town Minnesota life. Recommend his books.

Insightful look into life in Minnesota

Another fabulous chapter in the O’Connor Clan’s lives.
The storyline was solid, I thought, and the writing done very well. The dialogue is written realistically, just as people speak.
The problem is the narrator. He speaks so slowly, and seems to try and make every sentence a thing of great substance. This is especially true at the end of chapters.
If the narration is sped up, it’s tolerable. But nothing makes the dialogue tolerable from the characters. As I said, the dialogue is written with realism, but the narrator makes simple sentences by the characters sound snarky, and juvenile.
Seriously poor.
And pug-leeze! The word guillotine is NOT pronounced “gill a tine”, it’s pronounced “Geyatine”!
Hearing a common word like this while listening is head-shakingly disruptive. This is just one shocking example, there are many more. And when commonplace Spanish words are in the story, pronunciation butchery commences.
It would serve the author well to find another narrator, or at least insist that a producer edits the narration before publishing.

Missed 5 stars because of narration.

I really enjoyed this book, but then again I've enjoyed every book I've read by William Kent Krueger.
Living here in northern Minnesota, the stories really come to life and I can picture in my mind the scenery and plots. What I really love is the suspenseful plotlines...they always leave me guessing and wanting more.
This book and its scenes remind me of Lake Vermilion and the drive to Duluth. The characters remind me of people I have met and could therefore get a picture in my mind of all that was taking place. Such wonderful writing! I look forward to starting the next book in the Cork O'Connor series!

Great read!

My Expectations were wonderfully met by the entangled storylines that converged satisfactorily. I like the way Mr. Krugerrand characters are believable. Just good honest folks.

Another spellbinding story by William Kruger

Looking for a good series? Here ya go!

Cork O'Connor is a former Chicago policeman living in Aurora, Minnesota. Told in flashback early in the series, we learn he lost his role as sheriff. Cork finds himself caught up in investigations regardless, as he can't, and doesn't want to, shed the cop that is in his blood. Murder and mayhem abound. The plots are excellent and very creative.

You will be reminded of Joe Pickett because David Chandler narrates the Cork O'Connor and the Joe Pickett series, and the characters are similar. Strong alpha males with soft hearts.

Enjoy! Highly recommended.

I like all of Krueger's Cork books for probably the same reason so many others do -- lots of nature - and living WITHIN and WITH nature, not just looking at it. I also like the American Indian presence, showing appreciation and respect for that culture. For me, this is one of Krueger's best bcz plot and dynamic tension are there but the STORY isn't OVERRUN with run, chase, scare as the whole plot and action -- which Krueger does in several other of the Cork books. And there are, I think, more of the wisdom gems in this one - though unfortunately the narrator reads them in a way that makes them sound pompous and laughable but which, if spoken simply and quietly as the medicine man would, they would sound as they are - quiet deep truth. Fortunately, I can hear through this affected intonation (smile).

Loved it
