About this listen

The Tales from Wyoming are a collection of interconnected short stories of the Old West. Each story combines some fiction with some legend with a liberal dose of real history. The adventure begins A Good Man found in Volume One. A Soldier In the spring of 1885, Morgan Sandburg escorts a new investor for an Atlantic City gold mine. Stranded by a storm, an old soldier tells a tale of the Indian War in the wild Wyoming Territory. Caspar Collins was a 2nd Lieutenant in the 11th Ohio Cavalry Regiment. His assignment was to protect the pioneers on the Oregon Trail from Indian attacks. The cavalry had the upper hand with their new repeating rifles, but one day the Indians learned to... A Surveyor In the spring of 1885, Morgan Sandburg takes his new bride to Cheyenne and his parent's home. Abigail learns about her father-in-law's past work as a surveyor for the Union Pacific Railroad. She learns about the tribulations encountered as the railroad construction marched over the Laramie Mountains. In 1866, as the Civil War ended, James Evans was selected by the Union Pacific to survey a route around the Laramie Mountains. The exploration parties suffered from winter storms, lack of good water, and the terrible alkali dusts of the plains. The Indian menace grew worse the further west they went. James wondered how many lives the search for the mountain pass would cost. He wondered if he would survive. A Scientist In the spring of 1885, Abigail Sandburg enjoys her new in-laws and living in Cheyenne; per capita, the wealthiest city in the world. Jeremiah tells his the story about the mysterious English woman and her search for the diamond mine. In 1872, two men presented evidence that they had discovered a field of diamonds in Wyoming Territory. Asbury Harpending and his investors stop at nothing to control the mine. The geologist Dr. Clarence King was the man in the right place at the right time to discover the truth. Lost deep in Indian territory, will he and the English woman survive to tell the tale? A Calamity The summer of 1886 was blistering hot in eastern Wyoming. Abigail Sandburg rode a stagecoach to the new town of Lusk to visit with her husband, Morgan. She met colorful characters, and she learned the truth about a famous woman, Calamity Jane, about the Indian Wars, and about gunfights. And then, the real trouble started. A calamity threatened the lives of the entire Sandburg family. A Lynching The spring of 1889 brought hope for a bright future as Wyoming prepared to become the 44th State of the Union. In the land where God’s own majestic beauty coexisted with the untamed spirits, anything was possible. Morgan Sandburg teamed with Russel Potter and Rudy Hatch to explore the wonders of Yellowstone. All the while, the range detectives abused their authority as they cleansed the land of squatters. Genre Fiction Literature & Fiction Westerns War Wyoming Solider
