About this listen

TRAVELING FREE AND EASY Most people laughed when I told them that I was going to retire and go live in my van. Once I explained to them what I meant by living in my van the smile left their face and was replaced by a look of curiosity. What would you think if I told you I was living in my van? Perhaps you would think that I was a little bit left of center. But in reality, you would, I believe, be curious enough to want to learn more. If I were to ask you, where do you live, what would you say? Would you say that you live in a house or in an apartment? I would say to you that you don't really live in any one place. Let me explain what I mean by that. You don't really live in any one place, regardless of your lifestyle. For example let’s take the typical apartment dweller in large cities somewhere in the United States. They work, approximately 8 hours a day. Perhaps they might get a lunch break they'll spend about two hours a day traveling back and forth to work. With any luck they will be able to sleep eight hours. Of course, the daily routine of using the bathroom and shower takes about an hour a day which leaves only four hours a day for the many other tasks that you must accomplish. Those tasks would be shopping for groceries, yard work, getting your car serviced and a myriad of other things. So, if you responded to my question where do you live, and you responded "I live in an apartment at 456 Some St." I would have to laugh because in fact, you really don't live there. You do in fact, not live in any one particular place at all. You just stay at a place that has a bed, a kitchen and a few pieces of furniture that make you believe you are actually "living."
