About this listen

A Desperate Widow

Once a penniless orphan, Evelyn D'Orsay became a countess and a bride at the tender age of 16. But the flames of revolution forced her to flee France, with the aid of a notorious smuggler. Recently widowed and without any means, Evelyn knows she must retrieve the family fortune from France for her daughter's sake - but only one man can help her… the smuggler she cannot forget.

A Dangerous Spy

Jack Greystone has been smuggling since he was a small boy - and he has been spying since the wars began. An outlaw with a bounty on his head, he is in hiding when he becomes aware of the Countess's inquiries about him. He is reluctant to come to her aid yet again, for he has never been able to forget her. But he soon realizes he'll surrender anything to be with the woman he loves….

Story average, narration choppy but I suspect due to poor editing. I finished listening just to keep counting the repeated lines. Really took away from the experience.

This was a good book and the series was enjoyable. I did have a bit of a problem with the narrator in the many repeating of words. However, this could have been fixed during production phase. I enjoyed the previous narrators of this series much better. This was the last book for me to listen to of Brenda Joyce’s available in the Romance Package and I have enjoyed them all at different degrees. Now, on to a new author...

Good book, but...

Any additional comments?

I enjoyed the story and the narrator. This is my second Brenda Joyce novel and I will be reading more.

Enjoyed it

The narrator could have been better, her male voices weren't very good and there was something wrong with the recording, there was a lot of repeating of words. There was to much dwelling on the heroines feelings and specifications but in spite of that I did find I enjoyed the story.

good story.

The narrator was not my favorite. Her accents were screwed-up, she couldn't get the English and French accents correct and all the characters were a garbled mashup of both. Except for the tavern owner and his wife, who (instead of having Cornish accents) had almost pristine uppercrust English accents!
Also, the recording wasn't very professionally well done. I thought at first the recording was skipping or something, but it was just a bad editing job. You'll hear many repeated lines in this narration, with different inflections so you know they tried to edit one of the versions out but failed.
I tried to like this story, I did. But I just couldn't get into it. It was probably for the above reasons, but I was so bored and frustrated listening that I couldn't finish this book.

Meh. Couldn't get into this one.

The narrator was probably trying to bring some life to this dull, repetitive bit of monotonous drivel but just sounded breathy, melodramatic and bizarrely auto tuned at times. About a quarter of the way in I was so bored I just started skipping to the front of each chapter listening for a couple minutes and moving on I felt I missed nothing because it was just formulaic and bland
