A 2018 study in the journal GeoScienceWorld titled “Seismic evidence for significant melt beneath the Long Valley Caldera” should have rattled alarmists away from their doom cries of Yellowstone. The cadre of USGS experts involved in the study at the California Volcano Observatory in Menlo Park reported that “three-dimensional full-waveform topography” which reads sound waves bouncing deep in the Earth, revealed a reservoir beneath the Long Valley Caldera of more than 240 cubic miles of magma, with 27 percent hot enough and the right composition to be liquid.
Were this liquid to blast out of Long Valley, located south of Mono Lake near the Nevada border, it would be as cataclysmic as the last Yellowstone supereruption 640,000 years ago that formed its current caldera.
Sadly, the media continued and continues to cry gloom and doom about the more “glamorous” Yellowstone while virtually ignoring this other hotbed that created Long Valley’s current 20-by-10 mile caldera.
