About this listen
My husband and I moved from Idaho due to a job transfer in the fall of 1999 to a little town in South Dakota.
We were new empty nesters and left our friends and family behind to live, to us, in a strange new world. Terry wanted to be as close to the land as he could get, so we bought a small house in the little prairie town of Viborg.
I wrote weekly letters and a detailed journal for the six years we were there. These letters and other writings provide the basis of my stories.
We had many memorable experiences. The ones told here are just a few of them.
The following poem was written a few months after we arrived to live in Viborg, South Dakota. We stayed six memorable years before we returned to Idaho to be able to watch six grandchildren grow.

Can a simple concept shift your entire world? Bob certainly thinks so. When it comes to loving your neighbors, instead of focusing on having the “right answers” or checking the “right boxes”, what if you decide to simply do love? To shamelessly show love and grace to those around you—what would that look like? Not the kind of love that stops at thoughts and feelings, Bob's love takes action. Bob believes Love Does.

Story
When a spaceship landed in an open field in the quiet mill town of Sorrow Falls, Massachusetts, everyone realized humankind was not alone in the universe. With that realization everyone freaked out for a little while. Or almost everyone. The residents of Sorrow Falls took the news pretty well. This could have been due to a certain local quality of unflappability, or it could have been that in three years the ship did exactly nothing other than sit quietly in that field, and nobody understood the full extent of this nothing the ship was doing better than the people who lived right next door.

Story
Lucy Barton is recovering slowly from what should have been a simple operation. Her mother, to whom she hasn’t spoken for many years, comes to see her. Gentle gossip about people from Lucy’s childhood in Amgash, Illinois, seems to reconnect them, but just below the surface lie the tension and longing that have informed every aspect of Lucy’s life: her escape from her troubled family, her desire to become a writer, her marriage, her love for her two daughters. Knitting this powerful narrative together is the brilliant storytelling voice of Lucy herself.
