Despite being relatively unheard of, endometriosis affects an estimated one in 10 women worldwide. That's roughly 190 million people, and due to misdiagnosis, there's likely many more who are suffering without treatment. Getting a diagnosis of endometriosis can feel like a blessing and a curse. Knowing that you're not going crazy or blowing things out of proportion can be a huge relief. However, a diagnosis can also lead to feelings of isolation and discouragement - especially when you’re faced with treatment options that seem extreme. But don't despair - you aren't alone.

Story
Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

Really useful information
As someone who used to work at the pain clinic, hearing about substance abuse and the opioid crisis is nothing new to me. Contrary to what many people believe, substance abuse is more common than you think. The issue is multidimensional and requires a comprehensive approach to address the problem. Environmental factor and social support from the people around the victim of substance abuse play a crucial role in rehabilitation and recovery. I find the information provided in this book quite accurate and love that it is presented in a compassionate, nonjudgmental way. The chapters are outlined in an easy to follow manner. The book even covers the scientific explanation of the various types of pain. I find the final chapter regarding natural remedy for substance abuse quite interested as you don't hear about them often in Western medicine and I appreciate that it was covered in the book as a supplementary treatment. Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this audiobook and it did not impact my review.

Relevant and Timely
This stuff may not be easy to hear, but it's important. It's astounding how big this issue is and the author takes care to have empathy while providing sound information that helps me understand further what side effects happen with certain opioids. Having the knowledge from this book can help someone use these responsibly if they have to be used at all. I appreciate that the author touches on non-drug options, however the reality is that some people may need opioids. It's a good idea to ask about other options as well. Such an informative book!

Life-saving Information
I picked this book up because I have a friend going through rehab.
I have never taken drugs myself but I want to be there for her when she gets out. So, I picked up this book (and several others!) in the hopes that I could learn all I could so I can support her.
This book is, by far, the best on the subject.
Not only did I learn a little more about WHY she would do this, I learned how to tell if she's going to do it again and different things I could suggest she try instead.
I really do feel like reading this book has helped me become more compassionate and understanding of the difficult concept of being addicted to drugs. it's messy and it's nasty... but there's hope.
Not only is this book great for those of us who want to support our friends, it's also a great resource for someone who is trying to quit.
Milton backs up all of his findings with data and statistics. you can be sure that the information in this book is the most up to date scientific info out there.
I would recommend this book to anyone who seeks help or seeks to help.

Great Advice on Abuse of Opioids
I liked this audiobook; Firstly it explains what pain is and I think it's important to understand that first to then being able to know why people get addicted to opioids. I also loved the part about non medical techniques to heal like meditation and so on. Overall, I can recommend this book to anyone affected by this topic.
