About this listen

I am a survivor of an 11-year physically and emotionally abusive relationship. I suffered beatings, broken bones, knocked out teeth, public humiliation, and several serious murder attempts. This is unfortunately not a new story in our society today.

I'm a six-foot-three-inch, 200-pound man and my abuser was a five-foot-seven-inch, 130-pound woman. Stockholmed is the story of the transformation I made from a self-assured, successful young man to a beaten-down shadow of my former self, praying every day that death would release me from my psychological prison cell. The title, Stockholmed was derived from Stockholm syndrome. I believe that nearly everyone living in an abusive relationship suffers from a combination of Stockholm syndrome and PTSD. Domestic violence is not gender specific, and violence is simply one of the tools an abuser uses to keep his or her victim in line.

I had read the print version and it was very poignant but the book was brought to life in the audio format. The book reads to me like a conversation so to hear it was perfect!!
I love Tom's performance and I am in awe of Dave's courage. Bravo!

The bravest story

A compelling story about surviving domestic violence. The story was well written by Mr. Larson and very well narrated by Mr. Block. Something everyone should be aware of....domestic violence is NOT a one way street.

A very compelling and enlightening story!

First I'll address the technical I thought the book was well written if somewhat however the nature of the events as they occurred were repetitive and escalating in violence so this repetitiveness is unavoidable and necessary to convey the insidious corrosive effects on the victim.
The narration was excellent Mr Block did a very fine job it was almost like watching a movie of course credit for this effect also goes to Mr Larson for his conversational style and delivery.
As for the story itself and the author's purpose I can attest to having lived through the first 2 years of this during my second betrothal, I believe that if I had this book available at the midway point I may have saved myself a lot of misery. Luckily I was a victim in my mid 30 ties (more life experience) and had a good support group to help me the reason I bring this up is in the hopes of aiding Dave in his purpose of helping similarly trapped people GET HELP. It ISNT YOU. Life will definitely get better.
I'am sure Dave has and will help many people break the cycle
Of abuse.
Congratulations on a job well done.

Would you consider the audio edition of Stockholmed: 11 Years Surviving Domestic Violence to be better than the print version?

Have not read the book

Who was your favorite character and why?

There is no favorite character. Just a different view of a predetermined view of a specific kind of violence and control.

What does Thomas Block bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I think feeling, emotion, and different interpretation of what is being set down on the printed page is Tom's strong point.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

It's not life as we know it...

Any additional comments?

Heard the whole story in one afternoon....

My outlook toward a form of violence is magnified

As a survivor of domestic abuse I related to a lot of what the author wrote, and while I have been on a social riot about male victims of rape I didn’t realize what a wide spectrum of abuse some men endured. This was worth the read, and I’m glad this had a happy ending.

Eye opening
