About this listen
Though often thought of as a towering intellect and theologian, Cardinal Newman’s writings reveal a man who possessed a simple devotion to Jesus and Mary. These powerful meditations on the Stations of the Cross, originally written for his parishioners in the Birmingham Oratory Church, can aid us with the simple and singular focus on Christ’s passion and our own failings that contributed to it.
Groups of prayers bookend the 14 meditations that, though short enough to be listened to in a matter of minutes, can open up the mystery of Christ’s passion and deepen the meaning of our Lenten journey.
Canonized in 2019, St. John Henry Cardinal Newman has become a new jewel in the crown of the church. The wisdom found in his writings rival the Church Doctor’s and are a blessing to our contemporary world so bereft of Christ’s presence. Here, Cardinal Newman takes our hand and leads us up the suffering path of Calvary, where the Crucified One awaits.

Story
In honor of his canonization, this volume draws together Newman’s Marian writings into an anthology of this new saint’s profound writings on our Lady. Some are doctrinal or apologetic, while others are deeply devotional meditations. These two approaches, not only show two sides of Saint John Henry Newman’s character; they will increase your own love and devotion to our Lady. They illuminate the great depths of Marian doctrine from the Church’s treasury with which Newman has so powerfully permeated his own writings and cause us to go to her for aid.

Story
One of Cardinal Ratzinger's most important and widely read books, this volume is a revised second edition with an improved translation and an in-depth preface by the Cardinal. As he states in the preface, since this book was first published over 30 years ago, many changes and significant events have occurred in the world, and in the Church. But even so, he says he is firmly convinced that his fundamental approach in this book is still very timely and crucial for the spiritual needs of modern man.

Written by G. K. Chesterton, Orthodoxy addresses foremost one main problem: How can we contrive to be at once astonished at the world and yet at home in it? Chesterton writes, "I wish to set forth my faith as particularly answering this double spiritual need, the need for that mixture of the familiar and the unfamiliar which Christendom has rightly named romance."

Story
The Most Holy Rosary is one of the greatest prayers in the history of the Church. Garnished as it is with the testimony of saints and popes for the last thousand years, the only greater prayers are the Mass and the Divine Office. It is a prayer for the people, to be said over and over, and yet many still seek ways to enter into the deeper mansions of spiritual richness to be found in this devotion. If you seek to reap the full harvest of this bountiful prayer, focus on the mysteries to better follow the life of our Lord through the eyes of Our Blessed Lady.

Story
The stations of the cross, as with many devotional forms within the Catholic Church, has developed over the centuries. The practice of walking the Via Dolorosa began with pilgrims to the Holy Land in Jerusalem during the Crusades and was brought back to the local parish churches by those pilgrims and crusaders. St. Alphonsus Liguouri authored a standard form in the 1700s that continues to be used in parishes today.

Story
In 2007, Joseph Ratzinger published his first book as Pope Benedict XVI in order “to make known the figure and message of Jesus”. Now, the Pope focuses exclusively on the Gospel accounts of Jesus’ life as a child. The root of these stories is the experience of hope found in the birth of Jesus and the affirmations of surrender and service embodied in his parents, Joseph and Mary.

Story
With prophetic insight into our times, Benedict warns of a "radical manipulation of man" in the name of tolerance, insisting that the only "authentic counterweight to every form of intolerance" is Christ himself—and Christ crucified. A lifelong Catholic, the late pope pays tribute to some of the giant figures of Christianity who have served him through the years as guiding stars: his predecessor Pope John Paul II, the 20th-century German Jesuit martyr Alfred Delp, and the silent carpenter Joseph, his patron saint.

Story
St. Alphonsus Liguori (1696 - 1787) was an Italian bishop famous for his moral teaching. Initially, he practiced law, but was drawn to the religious life and became a priest in the Catholic church. He ministered as a missionary to the poor, setting up "evening chapels". He would later form his own congregation and then be appointed as bishop. He wrote many famous sermons, meditations, and ascetical works. His meditations are still used today for the stations of the cross during Lent.

A really great book that I found to be developmental and maturative for a young man coming of age such as myself. I found this book to be relatable and generally worthwhile to have read. I further highly recommend this book.

Lofty subject lovingly addressed
I think of the stations of the cross as a vast theology class by the Great Teacher. There are so many lessons for humanity and somehow the depths and riches of Christ’s message is inexhaustible . I knew that the genius of Saint John Henry Newman would have much to add. This is more a spiritual journey than an audiobook and ought to be rated six stars
