About this listen
An indispensable guide for modern seekers combining ancient wisdom with pop culture
Explore 21 days of creative activities curated from the world's wisdom traditions in this award-winning guide to modern spirituality.
A Spirituality & Health Magazine "100 Books We Love" pick & Nautilus Book Award winner
"A lighthearted, upbeat take on questions that have churned within human minds for millennia." (Spirituality & Health Book Review)
"A must-read for anyone seeking to find or deepen their spiritual path." (Francesco Mastalia, author of Yoga: The Secret of Life)
Mining the world's philosophical, scientific, and wisdom traditions, Spiritual Rebel encourages listeners to explore their unique spiritual style and life purpose. Narrators Sarah Bowen and Nicole Losie gently, and often irreverently, guide listeners through three weeks of unconventional spiritual practices to try out, including forest bathing, meditation with animals, visio divina, kirtan, divine reading, and visiting sacred locations, just to name a few.
Throughout the book, Bowen divulges juicy tidbits from her own spiritually rebellious journey. A preacher's kid originally inspired by the Force of Star Wars, she confesses her challenges with her birth religion, descent into addiction, and recovery into a life where everything can be sacred.
Drawing on the interspiritual wisdom of Wayne Teasdale, Dr. Andrew Newberg, Neil deGrasse Tyson, John Muir, Dr. Qing Li, Sarah Wilson, Deepak Chopra, Ram Dass, Thich Nhat Hanh, Madeleine L'Engle, Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, Phyllis Curott, and many many others, Spiritual Rebel is for anyone who desires meaningful experiences without having to commit exclusively to one path or fear they might be "doing it wrong."
"Informed and informative, thoughtful and thought-provoking, exceptionally insightful and ultimate inspiring.” (Midwest Book Review)

Shetty grew up in a family where you could become one of three things—a doctor, a lawyer, or a failure. His family was convinced he had chosen option three: Instead of attending his college graduation ceremony, he headed to India to become a monk, to meditate every day for four to eight hours, and devote his life to helping others. After three years, one of his teachers told him that he would have more impact on the world if he left the monk’s path to share his experience and wisdom with others.

Honest and Irreverent, Humble and Inspiring
Spiritual Rebel takes us along a richly honest and sincerely irreverent approach to defining a personal spiritual identity. The cracks and the crumbles, the false starts, the tumbles and grace-filled leaps that pushed Sarah Bowen towards finding a relationship with Spirit that worked are presented with humility and humor.
Yet, this is so much more than a memoir.
It is a thorough investigation of the changing face of religious, cultural, and spiritual beliefs, culling information from formidable unbiased institutions, and individuals who responded to Sarah's queries. Her own clunk-a-chunk advances/retreats/advances/retreats eventually guide her towards her unique wholehearted spirituality. Following her along, pausing periodically to do the exercises, the meditations, visit the websites that she offers, the reader can develop a series of open ended practices. If we do as she did and pursue what she suggests, we just might step proudly into our Spiritual Rebel selves, finding the awareness we need to embrace a new Sense of Spirit, or maybe, A Spirit that Makes Sense.
I'd be remiss, though, if I didn't say that I found it difficult to discern when the second narrator, Nicole Losie, was speaking. The quality and timbre of both woman's voices was surprisingly similar. As well, because I am a visual and tactile learner, I found the need to stop the recording, take notes (even when using the Audible mark up tools) while attempting to follow the suggested exercises, etc. disruptive. Hence the 4.5 stars....

Paths to the Jedi Temple are many
"...the ways our differences combine to create meaning and beauty" - Spock on IDIC
Spiritual Rebel is a wonderful guide to expand one's horizons and deepen one's perspective. Leaning into the Jedi path and the underling Power of Myth, Sarah Bowen has put together a comprehensive guide across a cornucopia of practices, beliefs and exercises from an extensive and diverse group of disciplines. Read by the author, Spiritual Rebel offers a well-constructed blueprint of weekly timelines and daily focus points as well as a plethora of external resources. I've flown from one side of this galaxy to the other, I've seen a lot of strange stuff, and whether you subscribe to hokey religions or just the Jedi way - Spiritual Rebel is a great companion to find paths you might not have traveled. - TDW

Inspiring from the start
This book inspired me. I wish i could spend about a week exploring each chapter with Sarah Bowen. I listened to the book, then went back and reviewed and wrote on the many practices included in the book. It will take me some time to sit with each chapter and practice, and it will be worth the time. This is a book to have in every library.

Useful, Funny, and Insightful
Sarah Bowen has delivered a most wonderful gift. A spiritual book that is book useful and fun while avoiding pretentiousness and preachiness.
The book is skillfully researched and offers opportunities for the reader to “do the work.”
It felt like Sarah was sitting in the backseat of my car, keeping me entertained and also engaged as we drove a journey towards Awakening.
This book is a great addition to any spiritual bookshelf (or audio library!).

Original, inspirational, endlessly engaging
Sarah speaks eloquently to my spiritual self, with a style that feels like she's talking directly to me. Her authenticity and clear expression of her perspectives address the topic with a liberating blend of seriousness and humor. Her story of finding her own way is refreshing encouragement to do the same in exploring our own unique connections to our deeper selves and whatever we each perceive as being beyond that.
Chock full of references and a series of suggested practices, I could not have a discovered a more inspiring story and reference. I find myself wanting to give a copy to everyone I know.
