Henri Nouwen
About this listen
From the best-selling author of The Return of the Prodigal Son, essential listening for Christians, Catholics, and all spiritual seekers.
We lead our spiritual lives in relationship with others. A faithful community gives us opportunities to worship, share burdens, offer forgiveness, and celebrate life. Wherever he went, Henri Nouwen created such communities, and within them, he offered spiritual direction.
Available as an audiobook for the first time ever, Spiritual Direction: Wisdom for the Long Walk of Faith is part of the Nouwen Trilogy. These convenient audio sessions let you adopt Nouwen as your personal spiritual director. As you listen, you will come to see the spiritual life as he did: a transformative journey that takes on meaning through interpersonal connections.
Each session was carefully prepared by Dr. Michael Christensen, an award-winning professor of Christian ministry and practice, and Dr. Rebecca Laird, who was Nouwen’s student at Yale Divinity School. Each volume of the Nouwen Trilogy collects Nouwen’s unpublished homilies, interviews, classes, and speeches, as well as excerpts from his published writings. Editing these works into a cohesive and definitive guide to the Christian life, Drs. Christensen and Laird memorialize his popular teachings.
With Nouwen’s guidance, you hold the key to true and lasting spiritual transformation.
This course is part of the Learn25 collection.

Story
At one of the lowest points in Henri Nouwen’s life, he gave a series of lectures on the importance of following Jesus in an age of anxiety. Drawn from those talks, this new work reveals what sustained Nouwen to remain faithful to the teachings of Jesus and led him to become an icon of compassion and vulnerability. Here, he writes eloquently about calling and purpose, fear and hope. And he explains why - with so many choices available to the 21st-century seeker - the greatest reward for those looking for spiritual direction is rediscovering Jesus’ teaching on love.

Story
What will we do with our lives, and with whom will we do it? In this story of flying and catching, Nouwen invites us all to let go and fly, even when we are afraid of falling. During the last five years of his life, best-selling spiritual author Henri J. M. Nouwen became close to The Flying Rodleighs, a trapeze troupe in a traveling circus. Like Nouwen’s own life, a trapeze act is full of artistry, exhilarating successes, crushing failures and continual forgiveness. He wrote about his experience in a genre new to him: creative non-fiction.

Many of us do not trust our own thoughts, feelings, and desires when it comes to discerning God's will. Instead we look outside ourselves to determine what God wants from and for us. In God's Voice Within, spiritual director Mark E. Thibodeaux, SJ, shows us how to use Ignatian discernment to access our own spiritual intuition and understand that the most trustworthy wisdom of all comes not from outside sources, but from God working through us.

Story
We need companions on our spiritual journey. The modern world has taught us to value autonomy and individualism. Our churches often see spirituality as personal and private. But we cannot go long in our Christian pilgrimage before realizing that isolation leads to spiritual barrenness. We soon discover that our souls long for accompaniment, intimacy, and spiritual friendship. As a result, many Christians today are rediscovering the ancient practice of spiritual direction.

A Course I Am Happy to Recommend
A blessing & challenge this book has been. I’m being led into Spiritual Direction and as I did the “Going Deeper” section of each chapter, I know I was in good hands being led by The Lord’s Spirit. Thank you Henri.

Relevant for the Modern World
Nouwen is a really great teacher. He writes beautifully about profound ideas, but never gets lost in the clouds. I highly recommend this book if you want actionable advice that will help improve your relationship with God in everyday life. The narrator (Colborne) does a nice job, and strikes the right tone and pace. 5 stars.

Henri and His Wisdom Echoes Here
I loved the stories and the vulnerability he shared. Even late in life he didn’t have all the answers but in a way that is the answer. Continue the work and become the lion in the marble.
