About this listen
How far would you go to get what you wanted? That's the question author Catherine McKenzie addresses in Spin - a delectable debut novel that takes listeners into the connected worlds of pop culture, tabloid journalism, and celebrity rehab. The story of a newbie undercover gossip reporter who follows a troubled starlet into a rehab clinic intending to dig up all the dirt she possibly can, Spin is smart, hip, utterly engaging contemporary fiction in the vein of Jennifer Weiner and Emily Giffin.

Becoming a stepmother is the best thing that ever happened to me. My favorite part of every day is picking Charlie up from school, watching her little rucksack bounce behind her as she skips over for a hug. I love the feel of those thin freckled arms around my waist. After a few rocky months of panic attacks when her mother deserted her, Charlie is flourishing. But the day Charlie’s mother Bronwyn returns without warning—showering Charlie with gifts and making promises she can’t keep—fear ripples through me. She doesn’t know just how far I will go to protect that little girl.

UrbanMyth: It was lauded as an alternative to the performative, show-your-best-self platforms—an anonymous discussion board grouped by zip code. The residents of Manhattan’s exclusive Upper East Side disclosed it all, things they would never share with their friends or their spouses: secret bank accounts, steamy affairs, tidbits of juicy gossip. So when a “hacktivist” group breaks into the forum and exposes the real identity of each poster, the repercussions echo down Park Avenue with a force that none could have anticipated.

Realistic Characters
3.5 - I really enjoyed the internal dialogue the character had with herself. It was realistic but still entertaining. I think what made this 3.5 instead of 4 for me were the relationships between the characters. That didn't seem as realistic to me. Sometimes I'm ok with that, but because the characters themselves were realistic, it was hard to reconcile that they all would have had these lasting relationships with each other. Overall though, fun and kind of touching story.
The narrator was awesome. The pacing was perfect and seemed perfect for the character.

Entertaining from the first page
If you could sum up Spin - A Novel in three words, what would they be?
Entertaining, funny, relatable
What was one of the most memorable moments of Spin - A Novel?
I know that girl. I had glimpses of my long ago party girl self in Katy. So I might have enjoyed the book more than most. The description of being sick in a bathroom and placing her face against the cool tile.....
Have you listened to any of Kristi Burns’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
This is her book for me. But it won't be the last.
I don't understand the description of a piece of music for each chapter. However, it's great music. This would make a great movie.
Who was the most memorable character of Spin - A Novel and why?
Katy of course. She has a running dialog with herself, and her inner woman has a sarcastic sense of humor. She is honest to a fault and leaves nothing to the imagination. How many of us have ever gotten ourselves in a situation that didn't turn out like we hope? And end up hurting the ones we care about in the process.
Any additional comments?
I just enjoyed this book. I couldn't put it down. Looking for another.

Interesting
Spin by Catherine McKenzie was an interesting book. She balanced a very serious story line with romance and humor. Sometimes I wasn't sure about what would happen next, so it kept me on my toes. Kristie Burns always does a great job as narrator, making the characters come to life with her voice.

Balancing Serious Topic With Humor-Very Good
Katie is desperate for a job reporting, well anything. She is offered her DREAM job, she must follow a star into rehab for the ultimate story, tell all.
This reminded me so much of Rachel's Holiday by Marian Keyes, which I adore – the story and the author. A chic lit book that balances serious issues and comic relief. I really enjoyed it.
It could've used a little more editing because I felt it was a bit long. There were a few places that felt like we were treading water and the story didn't really progress, that would be my only criticism. (The author had 20 minutes of shout outs AFTER the story. I'd be the same!)
Spin was a lot of fun. *I received a copy of this book in exchange for my review. I would recommend it to my friends who enjoy Sophia Kinsella & Marian Keyes.
Kristi Burns does a bang up job as Katie, as well as the plethora of characters we meet along the way. Well done.
Notes: I cannot think of anything to warn you about.

Loved this!
Catherine McKenzie writes with such fluidity and grace...she has wonderful character development-a story in which I could see every detail in my head. Narration was fantastic! Wasn't difficult to determine what was being spoken out loud by the Katie and what was in her head. This is my fourth Catherine McKenzie audiobook and I am not stopping!!

Good story with obnoxious characters
After listening to 'Forgotten' by Catherine McKenzie I was thrilled to start another one of hers. I was truly disappointed. Not in the authors writing style but in how the main character is portrayed. Note, that this is just my personal preference and that many others - probably young or new adults - will enjoy this story.
Spin is a novel about making a thousand mistakes and going ruthlessly after what you want, no matter the costs. It's also thought-provoking and thrilling.
The main character Katie is not very likable in my book. She's selfish, immature and obnoxious. Already in the first chapter I rolled my eyes about her immaturity and her even more, very unsupportive, immature friends. If you're a party girl, you'll love this book, because that's what's going on.
The story is really dragging out sometimes. My thoughts were, that at least 3 hours could be left out of this book.
The author does have an incredible talent of telling a great story with everything that comes with it. Just because I didn't like the characters in this novel, doesn't mean I won't read this author again. I will! Catherine McKenzie has the abillity to put you into the mind of real people with a tragic life and make it funny at the same time.
Narrator Kristi Burns does another great job. She really knows how to understand the characters she's portraying and she portrays the main character spot-on when portraying Katie and her immature mind. I'm about to think that Kristi can portray just about anyone. Again, I saw the story in images, like I was watching a movie.
