About this listen
Soul Songs - Bad Boy Series: Audiobook 2
Jake Stryker is the bad boy of country music. Tall, dark, and ruggedly handsome, he has the reputation of a party animal and enjoys all the perks of celebrity. His idyllic lifestyle was rocked by the news of his sister's death at the hands of her husband, Bobby. Jake took responsibility of his sister's twins, whilst Bobby was sent to jail.
Marty Donahue makes her living painting murals for people. She lives and travels in a 30-year-old RV accompanied by her one-eyed old cat Gruff. She loves her carefree life, traveling around the country, creating unique murals for all types of people.
When Marty was told her next job was for Jake Stryker, her initial response was "no." She wasn't crazy about men, and she especially disliked musicians, due to her father's mistreatment of her mother. If it hadn't been for the sad tale of the 4-year-old twins, she would have never taken it on.
Marty committed to doing not one, but two murals at the home of Jake Stryker. She wanted to help the kids, but she wasn't prepared to become another notch on the bedpost for the sexy superstar.
The next few weeks were filled with painting, kids, and Jake. She doesn't want to get close to him, she knows he's bad news, but she can't keep fighting the chemistry that's brewing between them.
Then they get the sickening news: Bobby has escaped from the jail where he was being held for trial. Word is that he's headed to Tennessee to get his kids back.
Will Marty and Jake be able to work together to save the kids from their maniacal father? And will they be able to save themselves from their attraction to each other?
Soul Songs is Audiobook 2 in the steamy Bad Boy Romance Series.

As one of the top paid defense-men in the NHL, my life has been a revolving door of beautiful women and no-strings-attached sex. Until Brynne. It was only supposed to be a one-night-fling. Hell, it wasn't even supposed to be that. I knew the cardinal rule. Don't touch the coach's daughter. And for years, I kept my hands to myself. It wasn't difficult considering Brynne Jacobs hates my guts.

Soul Songs
Soul Songs is a pretty good book. It's a quick listen with no real angst to speak of. There are minor spikes of tension in some scenes but they resolve quickly. The narrator does a pretty good job but the accents come and go a bit. It's not super noticeable so overall not a problem. My overall rating is a 4 because while there's certainly nothing bad about the book at all, it also wasn't something that kept me glued to my headphones. A good story though!

One Major Flaw!
Let me say first that I love Simone Carter's stories. I really enjoy how she creates a wonderful tale in a short amount of time. This story was wonderful before and after Chapter 5 where the MC vividly describes her rape. I do not understand why author's think they have to tell every detail of such an atrocious act. Generalities would suffice or just a simple statement that a character has gone through such a horrible ordeal would be fine. It's this chapter of why this story has three stars instead of five. I loved it except for that particular detail but it's a big detail! I have stopped watching movies and the like due to a rape scene being played out, to never finish it. The narration was excellently done by Lissa Blackwell, as usual. I love how she brings the story to life, giving the characters their own voices and emotions.

The rock star and his artist
This was a quick, sweet listen.
Jake is a rock star, who has gained custody of his twin niece and nephew after their mother was brutally murdered...by their father...in front if them!
Marty has been hired by Jake to paint murals in the kids' rooms. Marty strongly dislikes musicians so, of course, she takes an immediate liking to Jake. The kids are adorable and Jake's an awesome guy. Marty tries to fight her feelings but Jake's just too adorable....there's bad weather & a bad guy to make it more interesting. There's also an HEA...swoon

A tender love story, hero is tender & sweet!
This book was a surprise for me, as I am usually drawn to historical romance or mystery. That being said, I rarely read a contemporary romance, but this one was a real treasure! I enjoyed the characters - Marty, our heroine, hates musicians and loves her freedom, taking to the road in a semi-nomadic lifestyle with a one-eyed ginger cat as a companion. She has had trauma in her past (trigger warning if you’re sensitive to assault themes), and her father was a musician, so she despises them, as he was selfish and ultimately self-destructive, putting himself first while abusing her mom and his family.
She thinks she has found some peace in life, when she’s called in on a short project to paint the rooms of the niece and nephew of Jake Stryker, a country superstar with a bad boy reputation, she wants nothing to do with the project until she realizes the children have lived in fear of their father, robbed of their mom at only age 4, and now are living with Jake, as she was his sister, — murdered by her husband, who was the real bad boy in this book.
When Marty takes on work that is to be a short assignment, the children melt her heart and she is surprised to find that Jake is nothing like the bad boy image that the public perceives of him. He’s sweet, caring of the children, and enormously attracted to Marty. She finds her heart melting towards him as well, and while she never believes she would ever find love, she does, to her own surprise, living under Jake’s roof and getting to know his niece and nephew.
Narrator Lissa Blackwell gave the story a gentle touch and voiced the characters beautifully! She did a wonderful job bringing all of the characters to life, and her voice was soothing and easy on the ears.
I really enjoyed this book, and ate it up in less than a day! The love scenes are HOT and the HEA is very tender. This one is a huge thumbs up in my book, and I learned a lesson— never avoid a book you think isn’t your “type” (don’t read a book by its cover, etc)! I’ve been missing out on some great love stories and this one in particular taught me that you don’t have to stick to one genre to enjoy a book!

Romace with some drama
This a book with a little bit of everything; laughter, romance, drama and a happy ending (of course). The main female character grabbed my attention immediately with her showing the group of men at a bachelor party who's boss. Then walks in the lead male and I'm all in for the next few hours.

I really liked these characters. Marty is basically living an American dream. Living in her RV, going from place to place painting. She seems to have everything except long term committed relationships. Yes, she is a loner and she has been hurt. Once she experiences love and people who want her long term, can she continue her wondering ways? I loved it. I also appreciated the touch of spiritual as well.
Lissa Blackwell did another outstanding job telling the story.

Great story!
I really enjoyed this audiobook very much. I like bad boy romances and this one gave us complex characters, a good storyline and great narration. I liked the country music connection to the hero Jake and Marty, the heroine's art background. There is a balanced amount of drama, romance and sex. Overall a good audiobook!

Surprisingly sweet for a rocker romance...........
Soul Songs is the second book in the series, but it is a complete standalone. As with all Simone Carter stories, this one has a surprisingly sweet male lead given that he is all alpha and a rock star to boot. Jake Stryker is a famous rock star whose playboy lifestyle is completely disrupted when he inherits the guardianship of his sister's toddler twins. He commissions a mural painting for each of the kid's rooms, and he gets Marty Donahue. These two seem polar opposites: Marty is all about remaining completely free and unencumbered as she travels the country in a 30 year-old trailer with only her cat as companionship. Jake lives in a huge spread, has many friends and employees, and enjoys a very social and public life. However, from the first minute these two meet - which is a stitch all on its own - the chemistry between Marty and Jake is combustible. Add in two truly adorable toddlers worming their way into Marty's heart, and this book is touching and steamy and pretty funny, too.
Lissa Blackwell's narration is fantastic. She has a bubbly, light voice that is perfect for Marty's personality, but I found her equally convincing for Jake. Her performance is flawless, and I think she makes an already wonderfully entertaining story even better on audio.
