About this listen

Journalist Josh Dean tells the story of a lovable Australian Shepherd, Jack, on his novice tour through the exciting world of professional dog showing, following Jack from his first competitions in local school gymnasiums all the way to the great granddaddy of them all, the Westminster Dog Show.

A veteran journalist, Dean shines a warm, steady light on the trials that Jack and his plucky, dedicated owners come to face, and uses their story to explore the larger histories of dog shows themselves; the fascinating and sometimes bizarre history of purebred dogs; and our complex, heartfelt relationships to the pets we grow to love.

For dog lovers, fans of Marley & Me, Merle's Door, and Oogy, and fans of Best in Show, Dean's Show Dog is an irresistible instant classic.

Just the right amount of serious, educative and humorous blend for a k9 themed classic! I loved it!

What an entertaining and informative read!

The story may center on one show dog, but alot of background information surrounding many aspects of the dog show world are also discussed. I show and I still found many new insights and "hindsights" in this reading. This book was so much more than I exspected and in such a good way!

So much history in this story!

A good look into the inside workings of conformation. It made me laugh at times. Jack seems to enjoy life.

Informative and Entertaining

Entertaining and informative story about dogs, dogs shows, and the people that are involved in the industry around them.

Wonderful book about dogs and dog shows.

The book is worth a read, but the narrator is obnoxious. It may just have been the tone of voice the narrator used, but I also got the impression that the author, despite claiming otherwise, isn't a fan of dogs.

Obnoxious narrator

I think I could really love this book if it weren’t for the awful narrator. His voice is so annoying .I just can’t get past it.
