About this listen

A haunting tale of suspense, rendered with the masterful skill only Barker could muster.

After the loss of his parents, young Jack Thatch first met Stella as a child - this cryptic little girl of eight with dark hair and darker eyes, sitting alone on a bench in the cemetery clutching her favorite book. Gone moments later, the brief encounter would spark an obsession. She'd creep into his thoughts, his every waking moment, until he finally finds her again exactly one year later, sitting upon the same bench, only to disappear again soon after.

The body of a man found in an alley, every inch of his flesh horribly burned, yet his clothing completely untouched. For Detective Faustino Brier, this wasn't the first, and he knew it wouldn't be the last. It was no different from the others. He'd find another just like it one year from today. August 9, to be exact.

Isolated and locked away from the world in a shadowy lab, a little boy known only as Subject "D" waits, grows, learns. He's permitted to speak to no one. He has never known the touch of another. Harboring a power so horrific, those in control will never allow him beyond their walls.

All of them linked in ways unimaginable.

She Has a Broken Thing Where Her Heart Should Be conjures thoughts of early King and Koontz. A heart-pounding ride that creeps under your skin and will have you listening long into the night.

I loved it

If Netflix doesn’t buy this and make it a limited series there will be a broken thing where my heart should be.

Title doesn't do this justice

I'm not sue what Barker was aiming for with the title, but this book is so much more than a broken heart thing story. It is one of those books that you'd best set the end of chapter timer so that you remember to do something besides listening for what happen next. I'm not kidding. I found myself staring into space, trying to mentally piece this extravagant puzzle together

I have long been a fan of paranormal mystery/thriller novels. Koontz has been a long-time favorite of mine and it's safe to say that Barker's stories follow a similar pattern, However, I can't be certain if it was the words or the insanely-talented narration that kept me setting that chapter timer. Otherwise, it turned into the book I just couldn't turn off, kind of like books when I was a kid and hid in the bathroom to read.

One big difference between this book and many of Koontz's stories, there was an edge of romance thrown in. Not a whole bunch, but just enough to give hope to your imagination that the lead characters would remain together even after the story ran its course. It doesn't necessarily leave room for a sequel, but it does leave with some character inferences that something else could happen.

Enjoy the story. Just remember to set the end of chapter timer.

Very intriguing

The book came together nicely wrapping the story up with an almost ironic quality. Came to feel I knew the characters with the detail that was crafted!

Awesome!

I enjoyed this book from start to finish. It is so well written and the narrators made it even more special. J.D. Barker is such an exceptional writer - became a fan of his after reading the Series: Detective Sam Porter which also kept me at the edge of my seat. Enjoy!

Amazing!

This book sucked me in right away. I have never read a book that was so long that I didn't feel like it was dragging. Until now. I was excited it was so long because I wanted it to keep going. I recommend it to a friend, who also had the same experience and loved it.
What an excellent story line. There was some humor sprinkled in and some jaw dropping moments. I hope there will be a second book. Truly one of the best I've read in a while.
