About this listen
This is a plain English and abridged adaptation of Shakespeare's Troilus and Cressida. The play is set towards the end of the Trojan War, and loosely follows sections of the Iliad. The play combines two key plotlines: the romance between Troilus and Cressida, and the ongoing Trojan war. This adaptation simplifies Shakespeare's language, but retains the key elements of his play. This is theatrical production by a full cast.
Troilus and Cressida is often described as one of Shakespeare's problem plays, and features a tragic ending. The play itself also contains comic aspects, but also shares elements with many of Shakespeare's tragedies. It has been described as "that most vexing and ambiguous of Shakespeare's plays", and perhaps among the most modern of the Shakespeare canon. This production is abridged, containing the key elements and characters of the play, and running just over 20 minutes long. This makes it a useful introduction to Shakespeare, possibly for a younger audience, too, though some themes of the play are dark. Part of the plain English Shakespeare series of audiobooks.

This wonderful series opens with the back drop of the Wars of the Roses with the marriage between Eleanor Morland and a scion of the influential house of Beaufort. It is a union which establishes the powerful Morland dynasty and in the succeeding volumes of this rich tapestry of English life, we follow their fortunes through war and peace, political upheaval and social revolution, times of pestilence and periods of plenty, and through the vicissitudes which afflict every family - love and passion, envy and betrayal, birth and death, great fortune and miserable penury.

Story
His victories were legend in battle and bedchamber alike. Love was a political weapon he wielded cunningly and ruthlessly in his private war against enemies in the forum. Genius, general, patrician, Gaius Julius Caesar was history. His wives bought him influence. He sacrificed his beloved daughter on the altar of ambition. He burned for the cold-hearted mistress he could never dare trust. Caesar's women all knew and feared his power.
