About this listen
Here be ghosts.
Situated in the rural back country of Edwardian England is an old, mysterious house whose unique owner earns his living as a Spirit-Breaker, a hunter of ghosts. A former military veteran, Sgt. Roman Janus has devoted his life to aid those haunted, both emotionally and physically by obsessive wraiths whose spirits are still anchored to our world.
Airship 27 Productions is thrilled to present Sgt. Janus, Spirit Breaker by Jim Beard. Part detective, part occultist, Janus is himself a man of mystery whose own past is shrouded and the motivations behind his calling kept hidden. Within this volume you will find eight tales as narrated by his clients, each with his or her own perspective on this uncanny hero and his amazing career. Filled with suspense, terror and agonizing pathos, each a solid mesmerizing journey into the unknown world beyond.
Sgt. Janus, Spirit Breaker is the first in a new series by one of today's leading stars in new pulp fiction.

Ghost busting aint easy, sometimes a lil queasy
Sgt. Janus, Spirit-Breaker is a mysterious figure in the mystical world who goes around breaking spirits. No, I don't mean shattering people's wills, I mean as in putting down rampant and rampaging ghosts, revenents, and spooks. Like Ghost Busters minus proton packs and more mystical. Actually, this is nothing like the Ghost Busters, and I want to point out that this is a fairly serious story that is well paced, excellently written, and full of excitement. I did find that Janus disappearing for stretches was a little disappointing, I would have liked to see more of him in the book, but then he would be such a conundrum. I like that the book leaves a lot of stuff unanswered, I hate it when a writer blows his wad all in one book, there look to be more coming, and so the mysteries will reveal themselves in time.
I have a couple other books by Beard, including his Captain Action, Monster Aces, Black Bat, Occult Detectives, and Purple Scar to name a few. He has such a refined writing quality that has clearly come from years of honing his craft. He has a real appreaciation for the characters he writes, ahd seems to love pulp style books. I would sincerely say that this style is obviously his forte.
Formichella fulfills his duties as narrator in a powerful manner. He seems to be effortless as he navigates the story, and knows how to build tension or ease a moment. His voice is nice to listen to, and he plays each character's personal sound wonderfully. He helped to make the story fun! Even though I did receive a promo code for this review it in no way influenced my considerations of the material, and in fact, inspired me to be more honest. In fact, getting a code generally makes me harsher as a reviewer as I am more often concerned what someone like Me will decide based on my review.
