About this listen
Vanessa and Nick are en route to Washington, D.C., to celebrate their first wedding anniversary, but their differences threaten to ruin the weekend before it has a chance to begin.
When an accident further up the tracks leaves their train temporarily stranded in Harpers Ferry National Park, a chance meeting with the town's most iconic resident offers insight into a bit of local history.
Will a poignant message from the past help put the newlyweds' future on less shaky ground, or are they doomed to disaster?

Story
In 1691 the town of Crossfall taught the witch Thessaly how to die. They beat her, they shot her, they hung her - but nothing worked. When they finally tried to bury her alive Thessaly set the field against them. The first man died as a gust of wind harrowed the meat from his bones. A root, flung like a dirty javelin, cut a second man down. Many more deaths followed. The Preacher Fell impaled the witch upon her very own broom, but she dragged him down into the field to wait for three more centuries.

A Good Old-Fashioned Ghost Story
A young couple's chance meeting during an emergency train lay-over changes their relationship for the better.
This one's a classic urban legend type story about a ghost who repeatedly returns to the scene of her death, but it's the surprise ending that makes it absolutely charming.
Short, sweet and perfect for a Halloween thrill.

Poor Jenny...
Screaming Jenny by Becky Muth is based on a true tale that happened years back in Harpers Ferry. I loved how the author went from the present back to the past to tell the tale through the old woman on the bench. Vanessa and Nick, the couple in the present day who are traveling on the train that gets held up at Harpers Ferry, are rather forgettable and annoying. Or should I say Nick is annoying and Vanessa seems to be settling for a pretty self absorbed man. I wouldn't call this a romance at all, more of a quick tale of the past with a hint of the paranormal. Nick and Vanessa are bickering or at odds for most of this tale until the end when they remember everything great about each other and all is well again. It just didn't feel authentic or real at all. As for the tale of Jenny herself, it was entertaining and sad, but interesting, though not a tale that I feel warranted it's on short story.
Jennifer Gilmour did a great job narrating this tale. I loved her voice and felt that she was the perfect fit for this tale. Overall, I would probably skip this one but I would definitely have no hesitations to listen to future works narrated by Ms. Gilmour. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher for an honest review.

not really a ghost story
the story is more about a young married couple arguing over his video game playing. There is a ghost story included. Nothing scary.

Perfect Halloween Story!
I associate author Becky Muth with romance, and there were elements of a love story here, but the truly Dickensian tale is of Jenny--and her kith and kin. If you've been to Harper's Ferry, you know it rises steeply from the waterfront, which consists of the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers. Civil War scholars know of John Brown's raid, and the railroad bridge now provides a lovely, scenic walk, especially when fall foliage is on display and you can view three states in brilliant color. With much of its original fabric intact, the town is the perfect backdrop to our story, which is short, spooky, and perfectly read and acted by narrator Jennifer Gilmour.

A Spooky little tale.
Screaming Jenny was a nice short story about a couple coming to terms with the possibility of a failing relationship. There are brought together by a tragic tale of misfortune and misery, and a common interest in the ghost tales of nice old lady. The story was a little creepy but it was mostly about the couple and their relationship.
The narration was done very well. The characters came to life and you felt for the characters in the story within the story.

A nice short ghost tale...
It's a nice short ghost tale, the kind kids like to share at campfires... The basic story, Jenny's, is woven into a wider frame of Vanessa and Nick's, and the narration flows smoothly from one to the other. As it is a really short tale, there's not much room for character development or detailed descriptions of people and places, but there are enough facts and pieces of information to create a clear picture in your mind. Also, it's not the scariest of ghost stories you can find, but it evokes empathy and sympathy for all the characters. And, as the author explains, it is based on a real local legend, so it has that feel of authenticity to it I like.
As for the narration by Ms Gilmour, it's really good; the pace is right, the voicing of individual characters very well done, with a bit of acting added to the pot in just the right places.
Generally, it's a nice quick listen that will give you a small respite in between household chores:)

Plodding
This story could be good with some editing to fix the pacing. The first 3rd is about him ignoring her for video games and her stewing about it. That's a long time to drone on about something which isn't really relevant to the plot except to establish conflict. The creepy part was good but that too took a while to get to after meandering through uninteresting details for the sake of padding the length. Once the good parts came, they were worth while. Unfortunately by that time, they had to overcome the slow inertia that had built up.
Thank goodness the narration is so good. It was the highlight of the experience.
I wish I could leave a better review. The premise is strong as is the execution of said premise. With a good editor, this could have been more fulfilling.
