A plain envelope addressed to Mr. Sherlock Holmes has been delivered to 221B Baker Street. The stock is cheap and could have been purchased at any general shop. The hand, however, is rare for its graceful sweep and regularity. “A true technician,” Holmes noted. “Mr. Holmes,” it begins. “You don’t know me and I am a man of no importance to anyone except my employer, and he couldn’t function without my services. My only significance to you, Sir, lies in the fact that I mean to kill. Only a few additional clews for the great man are in order. I live in Whitechapel and have done ...

Story
A weathered Cornish sailor has come to 221B Baker Street to see Sherlock Holmes. He shares a tale so haunting and otherworldly that it seems to offer only one possible explanation, a supernatural one. William Berryman of the coal ship Mariah went to sea as a boy and is now an old man, but in all his years he has never experienced anything like he did in The Great Storm of ’99 off the Cornish Coast. The storm drove his ship into the deadly “Manacles”, a line of savage rock outcroppings that had already claimed over a thousand souls. He tells Holmes and Watson that only nine of nineteen...

Holmes is back and…the game is still afoot! The year is 1899 and Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson are at home at 221B Baker Street as London endures its coldest winter in memory. Too much sermonising and navel gazing
It’s not so much a whodunnit as a long-winded tale about the oppression of colonisation, of Watson’s angst over his past relations with fellow soldiers and Holmes’s tender feelings for him. Nothing wrong with any of that and it is all quite well written. Hence three stars. But I read Sherlock Holmes for a good escapist murder. If I wanted angst and unpleasant reality, I would read the papers.
Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.
