About this listen

Growing up in the mill slums of Pittsburgh, Daniel Robinson was a punching bag for his drunken father, ignored by his mentally ill mother, and trapped in the grip of poverty. He’s finally freed from the torture of that home only to crash land in another hell when he’s abused by the pastor who takes him in. Daniel escapes once again, spending the next decade wandering homeless throughout the country during the turbulent 1960s. On his journey, he gets caught up in the hippie drug invasion in San Francisco, racial violence in Cleveland and Detroit, and especially a deadly anti-war protest at Kent State. Daniel finally finds love with someone who was running from her own demons.

Together they get a second chance at happiness and the family they both want. Because of his experience on the street, Daniel is offered a job helping men coming from prison. When asked to find housing for Charles Vickers, a black man who spent twenty years in prison for a rape Daniel is convinced he never committed, he and his wife open their own home to him. This enrages the community, especially when a local girl disappears. Violence erupts—with Daniel as the focus of their rage. Should he stay and fight for Charles—and put his family at risk, or run away again?

RUNNING AS FAST AS I CAN is an unforgettable, multi-award-winning story about overcoming childhood abuse and the generational trauma of poverty to find love, forgiveness, and redemption. Daniel’s story, with its harrowing social themes conveyed through an intense personal odyssey, vividly portrays a traumatic period in our history, while grappling with intense emotional and social issues we still face today.

Sometimes our lives take so many twists in turnss that we begin to wonder what our purpose is. This book took me on many twists and turns and through every phase of his life. The descriptive writings made it hard to put the book down. I learned that we have many different purposes. Sometimes the things that sometimes make us the saddest, are the things that help us grow the most. i am so glad I read this. Bravo!

Running as Fast as I Can is more than just a good book—it’s a life lived on the page. I don’t usually read books like this, but I was asked to give my input, and I have to say, I’m glad I did. The emotion, the trauma, the resilience—it all stayed with me long after I finished the last page.

What makes this story even more powerful is knowing that the author has been writing it his entire life. And you can feel that in every chapter. This isn’t a story written from the outside looking in—it’s raw, lived experience. The journey Daniel takes, from surviving an abusive childhood to navigating homelessness, social injustice, and ultimately redemption, is unforgettable.

I was moved by the love he finds, the risks he takes for others, and the deep humanity that runs through the entire book. The backdrop of major events in American history adds even more weight, making this a story that’s not just personal, but deeply relevant.

This is a lifetime story in every sense—painful, beautiful, honest, and full of heart. I highly recommend it. It’s a testament to the human spirit and the possibility of healing, even after everything seems lost. A truly unforgettable read.
