About this listen
Who needs a wedding ring when you can pick up a sword? A remarkable and utterly inventive novel from Sharon Cameron, author of The Dark Unwinding, which USA Today called "spellbindingly imaginative".
History has a way of repeating itself. In the Sunken City that was once Paris, all who oppose the new revolution are being put to the blade. Except for those who disappear from their prison cells, a red-tipped rook feather left in their place. Is the mysterious Red Rook a savior of the innocent or a criminal?
Meanwhile, across the sea in the Commonwealth, Sophia Bellamy's arranged marriage to the wealthy René Hasard is the last chance to save her family from ruin. But when the search for the Red Rook comes straight to her doorstep, Sophia discovers that her fiancé is not all he seems. Which is only fair, because neither is she.
As the Red Rook grows bolder and the stakes grow higher, Sophia and René find themselves locked in a tantalizing game of cat and mouse.
Daring intrigue, delicious romance, and spine-tingling suspense fill the audio of this extraordinary tale from award-winning author Sharon Cameron.

great listen. wonderful story.
I really enjoyed this book by Sharon Cameron. my only issues were the vague setting and the fact that the reader did better voices for all of the male characters. but I think all aspects of the story, performance, and characters gave for an exciting and captivating novel.

Excellent story
It is easy to become immersed in the plot’s intrigue and the character’s lives right away and stay connected until the end. The French and English accents the narrator uses in the audiobook are perfect, adding another layer to an excellent story.

Scarlett Pimpernell ripoff
Thinly disguised and barely different- yet I suppose if you hadn't read the original you'd like it. Sadly, the original is a Classic for well deserved reasons. I hate to be a curmudgeon but why are these people getting awards for just reworking past creations that had real merit? There's a while new genre of blatant ripoffs- and they aren't improving on anything. Mostly I'm offended that the summary from the publisher didn't state clearly what it was - do we just assume that no one reads real books anymore? Ignoring the original doesn't make the plot line your own kids.

Not the past, but yet very much the past
Would you listen to Rook again? Why?
Yes. Probably to see if I missed anything the first time.
What did you like best about this story?
The character, because they were well written.
Which scene was your favorite?
The personal scenes between the main two characters, because I was looking for romance and their personal interaction. I only wish the story contained a little more heat.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Not moved, but very interested in the parts were they talked about the fragments of "history" they found.
Any additional comments?
I found the concept of a future were society (void of technology) would developed to mimic history hard to believe. Fashion ideas like powdered wigs and corsets are very specific things and I just can't image them popping up again. And why are woman back to being the property of their fathers and husbands?
One of the reviews said this was a ripoff of the Scarlet Pimpernel and I think setting this story in future society (void of technology) was the writers way of make this a "new story".

Wow, an unforgettable novel!!!
Sharon Cameron's novels do not get the recognition that they deserve, she is an amazing writer and her novels are absolutely unforgettable. Excellent Story/plot line, perfect character development, and always a great ending. I no I'm not the best at leaving reviews and going into detail like some other reviewer's out there but I no a good story when I read it and this story is well worth a credit. The narrator really fit the story, and she does a great job. The Only complaint I have is that it really needs to be downloaded in the high quality format, which yes the file size would be larger but the sound quality would be so much better. With a lot of audible novels it doesn't matter but with this one it does, downloading in standard quality format makes the voices hard to make out unless you are really paying attention and I even had to rewind and play over to catch what was being said. A small complaint for such an amazing novel, and seeing how you've been warned ahead of time, its not something you will even have to bother worrying about because you now no to download in high quality. 😆😜
