About this listen
AN INSTANT USA TODAY BESTSELLER
Police Chief Jesse Stone investigates the mystery behind a dead body found strewn with photos of murder victims and placed on top of $2 million in cash, before a mob of hit men converge on Paradise.
Just another day in Paradise . . .
Chief of Police Jesse Stone is on his way home from a long shift when a call comes in for a welfare check on an elderly resident of the wealthy seaside town of Paradise, Massachusetts. Inside a house packed with junk and trash is a man’s dead body. It’s a sad, lonely end, but nothing criminal . . . until Jesse finds the photos of murder victims strewn around the corpse, on top of a treasure trove of $2 million in cash.
Jesse takes on the case and finds a trail leading to an aging mobster who will do whatever it takes to keep the past from coming to light. Before long, Jesse has a price on his head as hit men converge on Paradise to take back the cash and destroy any remaining evidence. But the real danger might be coming from inside his own department. Jesse Stone must unearth the truth buried under the wreckage of a dead man’s life . . . before he winds up in the ground himself.

Story
Stiles Island is a wealthy and exclusive enclave separated by a bridge from the Massachusetts coast town of Paradise. James Macklin sees Stiles Island as the ultimate investment opportunity: all he needs to do is invade the island, blow the bridge, and loot the island. To realize his investment, Macklin, along with his devoted girlfriend, Faye, assembles a crew of fellow ex-cons - all experts in their fields - including Wilson Cromartie, a fearsome Apache. James Macklin is a bad man - a very bad man. And Wilson Cromartie, known as Crow, is even worse. As Macklin plans his crime, Paradise Police Chief Jesse Stone has his hands full. He faces romantic entanglements in triplicate: his ex-wife Jenn, is in the Paradise jail for assault, he's begun a new relationship with a Stiles Island realtor named Marcy Campbell, and he's still sorting out his feelings for attorney Abby Taylor. When Macklin's attack on Stiles Island is set in motion, both Marcy and Abby are put in jeopardy. As the casualties mount, it's up to Jesse to keep both women from harm.

Story
World famous author Melanie Joan Hart asks for Sunny's help in tracking down Book Babe, the screen-name of an enormously popular book reviewer, who has trolled her with a deeply insulting one-star review. This usually wouldn’t matter except that Book Babe has thousands of followers, and her unwarranted blast has Melanie's publisher threatening to pull all her books. But Sunny's investigation reveals that the reviewer and Melanie have a rich history—in fact, she may even have good reason to hate the torn-up author.

Fast moving: easy listening
I love the Jesse Stone character and his sidekicks. Intriguing story with twists and turns but the writing manages to be compelling and without a lot of descriptive violence, foul language or grotesque imagery, often a wonderful change from other mysteries.

Solid first attempt
I think this was a decent first book by yet another author taking over the Jesse stone novels. Would like to see a bit more character development from Jesse but overall it was a solid story. Little too focused on things/ppl who don’t seem to be at the core of these stories but I liked it and as always the narration was fantastic. Worth a credit

Don't believe the Negative Reviews
I don't understand the reviews below that are really negative. I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion.
This is a GREAT book. I hope the author is not deterred by the few negative reviews. I found it action packed and true to the series. Everything was perfect as far as I was concerned.
I could not put it down.
I'm sorry some others did not enjoy it, but I am looking forward to the next one. I hope this one sells very well and the next one comes quickly.

Trust your gut
I am a loyal follower of the Jesse Stone series; my deepest enjoyment is when Jesse follows his gut (in spite of all the background noise) in this offering his connection with other characters is either confused or non-existent. When his charisma with characters is disconnected it dilutes the richness of the story telling.

A good story well told.
I miss the humor that, Robert B. Parker infused into his writing. There were witticisms in, Parker’s work that were absent in this work. That ingredient gave RBP’s work a distinctive flavor. I look forward to it. Otherwise, the author captured the essence of the characters and was faithful to them.
