About this listen
The groundbreaking book that revolutionized exercise nutrition and performance for female athletes, now freshly updated
Women are not small men. Stop eating and training like one.
In ROAR, exercise physiologist and nutrition scientist Stacy T. Sims, PhD, teaches you everything you need to know to adapt your nutrition, hydration, and training to work with your unique female physiology, rather than against it.
By understanding your physiology, you’ll know how best to adapt your lifestyle and build routines to maximize your performance, on and off the sports field. You’ll discover expert guidance on building a rock-solid foundation for fitness and everyday life with tips for determining your high-performance body composition, gaining lean muscle, and nailing your nutrition. Because a women’s physiology changes over time, you’ll also find full chapters devoted to pregnancy and menopause.
This revised edition includes a wealth of new research developments, expanded recommendations based on those findings, and updates to reflect the changing landscape of women's sports, including:
- An updated action plan for peak performance across all phases of your menstrual cycle, as there is never a bad day to perform at your best
- A fresh understanding about the impact of hormonal contraception on training
- A look into why you need more protein than the average woman and how these needs change across your lifespan
- The reasons why sleep is your most powerful recovery tool and how to manage disruptions to your internal clock
- A deep dive into saunas, cold plunges, and other training and recovery techniques as they apply to female physiology
- Insights into biohacking and what works (and doesn’t) for active women
No matter what your activity is—Olympic lifting, general fitness, endurance, or field sports—this book will empower you with the personal insight and knowledge you need to be in the healthiest, fittest, strongest shape of your life.
* This audiobook edition includes a downloadable PDF that contains exercise pictures, recipes, planning charts, and other useful resources in the book.

Story
More than 70% of women experience musculoskeletal symptoms like joint pain, muscle loss, and reduced bone density as they enter perimenopause and menopause. These symptoms—what Dr. Vonda Wright refers to as the "musculoskeletal syndrome of menopause"—can often set women up for broken bones, increasingly limited mobility, and reduced independence later in life. Indeed, as Dr. Wright explains in Unbreakable, because we tend to ignore the fitness of our skeletal muscle—the engine that drives our healthspan—our muscles and bones can get weak and crack under our own weight.

In Europe, hypertension is diagnosed in more than 30 percent of the population. And everywhere, adolescent mental illness is on the rise. So what is really “normal” when it comes to health?

Never before have women been in such a hurry to do so many things and be there for so many people. The pace of modern life has drastically increased - but even though our minds can go faster and technology allows us to get more done, our bodies still have cavewoman-like biology - which means they cannot respond healthily to the new and constant pressures we experience. In this book, nutritional biochemist Dr. Libby Weaver explains how a stressful, fast-paced lifestyle can have dangerous effects on all areas of a woman's health.

Story
Menopause and perimenopause are still a black box to most doctors, leaving patients exasperated as they grapple with symptoms ranging from hot flashes to insomnia to brain fog. As a leading neuroscientist and women’s brain health specialist, Dr. Mosconi unravels these mysteries by revealing how menopause doesn’t just impact the ovaries—it’s a hormonal show in which the brain takes center stage.

“I haven’t changed my diet or exercise habits and yet the scale keeps moving in the wrong direction. What’s going on?!” Time and again, this is the question Dr. Mary Claire Haver’s patients asked. At first, a practicing OB/GYN, she’d dutifully advise what she’d been taught in medical school: eat less and work out more.

Knowledge is Power.
This is a great book, but as I am not into competitive sports or activities, I found myself longing for a book to just tell me how to live. I find all the tricks and tips to maximize performance at a race to be unhelpful for me. I'm just want to know how to live better.

Very informative!!
I really enjoy, knowing all these things about my own body. I also like that she debunks some of the appliance myths and supplement myths out there. Great book just like the other one by the same pair.

Audio not the right format, too recipe focused
Women rave about this book and I enjoy the author on podcasts but the book is basically listening to a menu tailored to specific athletes out loud in a robotic voice. I do not recommend the audio book and the same info can be collected online. The food recommendations do not apply to anyone following an anti-inflammatory diet or paleo, so it's so much wasted space.

Gold mine of info, HORRIBLE NARRATION
This is the book I have been looking for my entire life! I wish I could gift it to every female on the planet and I wish I’d had this earlier in my journey. Best, clearest explanation of all things hormonal, female athleticism, nutrition, exercise, and how to approach menopause armed with facts and action steps that are straight forward and easy to take to prevent injuries, bone density loss and muscle mass loss. I was 100% impressed and immediately went and bought a PAPER COPY of her next book. I am sad to report the narration was INTOLERABLE. I was so disappointed I spent money on the audio version only to turn around and purchase a paper copy because I simply couldn’t stand it. Do yourself a favor and buy a couple paper copies for you and all the women in your life BUT SKIP THE AUDIO VERSION, it will drive you mad.

Love, love, love the info, HATED the narration
I've been looking for this info for such a long time! So extremely helpful. I have been implementing the recommendations and already see a huge difference and feel so much better. Especially if you are a menopausal or post-menopausal athlete, read this! I hated the narration from the get go and hated it more with each chapter. I could barely listen until the end. I ended up purchasing a printed copy because of this and also because I found it was really needed to go back to certain sections (which I now have highlighted) and to easily access the recipes and exercises.
