Recommended listening for all Americans as well as for foreigners seeking to gain historical wisdom and insight, this magisterial and lucid history of America, from the beginning to the present, is written with a lighter touch by a respected historian.©1989 John R. Struggled to continue, slow moving and the timelines were all over the place, just seemed like a compilation of words.

I've never read or listened to a more shallow book on history. The author jumps from one subject to another like listening to TV news sound bites and never getting to the core subject of the historic era or epoch. He treats the historic literature of each era as if the authors made the history or singularly affected the the course of history by their mere writings rather than the actual persons involved in the history. I wouldn't recommend this book.

I have read many books about the American Revolution. At first I thought this author was just not getting his facts right but then as I read more, particularly about the 1980s, I decided he was trying to rewrite history according to his view point. This is the worst history book I have read. I would not recommend it to anyone. He tries to be an intellectual but fits into the glass of "A little learning is a dangerous thing";. Very poor job John Alden.
