About this listen

In America, demons wear white hoods.

In 1915, The Birth of a Nation casts a spell across America, swelling the Klan's ranks and drinking deep from the darkest thoughts of white folk. All across the nation they ride, spreading fear and violence among the vulnerable. They plan to bring hell to Earth. But even Ku Kluxes can die.

Standing in their way are Maryse Boudreaux and her fellow resistance fighters, a foulmouthed sharpshooter and a Harlem Hellfighter. Armed with blade, bullet, and bomb, they hunt their hunters and send the Klan's demons straight to hell. But something awful's brewing in Macon, and the war on hell is about to heat up.

Can Maryse stop the Klan before it ends the world?

AMAZING

The story is an incredible story of anger and hate. The way the author shows the differences in these emotions is astounding. The audiobook reader does an incredible job with the different voices and songs. Truly a beautiful book all around.

Excellent Universe and Narrator

I love the universe that this builds, weaving all kinds of real historical and cultural touchstones into a rich mythology. I wish the other aspects of the book got as much attention—the characters are mostly archetypes and the plot never gives them room to do anything but the climactic move of what would otherwise be a chapter or series of chapters full of subtle discovery. This rushed quality robs most moments of their power, which are treated like big payoffs but have never been given enough time to build beforehand. However, I’d love to read more from this universe and from Clark in general. Narrator Waites does an excellent job. [AUDIBLE]

This was phenomenal

I would think anyone who loves Lovecraft Country TV show would absolutely adore this.
This is easily my favorite book of 2020!

I love being told a story

The teamwork between the author and the performer makes a perfect case for audiobooks. In no way would I have been able to enjoy this book as intended by reading it on my own. I get cold chills thinking about the many ways the performer just brought a new dimension to so many moments.

I love being told a story means yes, there was a solid structure to the story. But the relationships were the meat of it. The denouement was sweet without indulging.

I'll definitely listen to it again.

This what I love about fantasy

Or it’s about time that fantasy is released from the shackles of knights, kings and aristocratic ladys. If you want something different we need writers who ARE different. This a great book that weaves real American history the way that it was experienced by large portion of American society into a great story. There are knights and heroes here who battle evil, but the knights don’t wear plate armor ( and aren’t even CALLED knights) and the heros are an unseen and ignored part of society. Fantastic Book.

This narrator was perfection

I liked this book ok, it had a Lovecraftian horror vibe which I really enjoyed. However, I think it could have benefitted from being a little bit longer because the characters never really felt very deep and I struggled to connect with them. Overall, it read like a literary classic and because of its content may have the potential to become one.

The narrator was FANTASTIC, one of the best I’ve heard so far. Her voice gave the story so much character and depth. The performance was definitely worthy of 5-stars!

Amazing.

This is, hands down, the best book I've read this year. There are some interesting parallels between this book and Matt Ruff's LOVECRAFT COUNTRY, which I liked but didn't love. Ultimately, I felt like this book accomplished something similar that Ruff had set out to do in his novel, but P. Djèlí Clark did it better than Ruff. It's possible that the difference is in the authors' lived experiences and racial identities...

The narration for this audiobook is excellent. I'm looking forward to reading more works by Clark and listening to more books read by Chance Waites.

Love the story

Great story, but the narration felt overdone and forced at times distracting from the power of the narrative itself.

The immersion really get you

I felt like I was thrown back to being a kid immersed in a fantasy world. The emotions definitely came through and when it hits I know this work is really good.
