About this listen

Best-selling author Richard Morgan talks to us about his award-winning novel, Altered Carbon, and its television adaption. The first chapter in the Takeshi Kovacs trilogy, this cyberpunk mystery unravels 400 years from now, when mankind is able to bypass death by recycling their physical selves and transporting their consciousness from one body to another.

In this exclusive interview, Richard revisits the story and characters which first brought him major critical acclaim, back in 2002. He also addresses the many authors that influenced his writing and unveils what might be next for Takeshi Kovacs.

I am an enormous fan of his science fiction work, so naturally it was awesome to hear from them. It’s even interesting to get a little additional insight into the future of his Thirteen/Black Man/Thin Air universe. Holly is a great interviewer as well. High fives all around!

Morgan gives many interesting insights. He liked the long-form Netflix adaptation, which cost $12 million per episode to film. He is collaborating on some Takeshi Kovacs graphic novels. (The first of which, Download Blues, is already out). He may be writing more with Hakken Veil. He considers Thin Air to take place one or two hundred years after Thirteen. (This despite internal evidence that is is a prequel. Note: the atmosphere on Mars is fully breathable in the novel Thirteen, but is only breathable in canyons and craters with containment fields in This Air. Something to think about.)

This interview got me excited that more great sci-fi is on the way. I consider Morgan one of the brightest lights in the SF firmament, and to know that he is still producing good stuff is very good news indeed.

Juicy Tid-Bits for Kovacs (and Veil) Fans

I loved hearing the author talk about his writing. It is always amazing to get first hand insite into the books you read.
However, while I did find the Altered Carbon series for Netflix interesting... it was not as good as the book. Nor was it entirely faithful.
Thank you though Richard Morgan. Your writing is inspiring for a person drowning in our modern society where one can clearly see the fictional narrative being acted out in some dystopian future born of our somewhat dystopian present.

Great to hear!
