Story
Of all things Catholic, there is nothing that is so familiar as the Mass. With its unchanging prayers, the Mass fits Catholics like their favorite clothes. Yet most Catholics sitting in the pews on Sundays fail to see the powerful supernatural drama that enfolds them. Pope John Paul II described the Mass as "Heaven on Earth," explaining that what "we celebrate on Earth is a mysterious participation in the heavenly liturgy."

Story
The Ancient Origins of Modern Holidays draws from the Bible and Jewish sources on what has always been defined as paganism and idolatry. In this book, we learn which holiday practices are forbidden and which ones are not. The Dead Sea Scrolls record the origins of the festivals celebrated on the equinoxes and solstices and reveal why they are important for Christians today. Using these sources, Christians can easily draw the line on practices and celebrations. We learn how to nullify paganism and take back what God gave us, so we can be obedient to His commands.

What could be more familiar than the Christmas story - and yet what could be more extraordinary? The cast of characters is strange and exotic: shepherds and magicians, an emperor and a despot, angels, and a baby who is Almighty God. The strangeness calls for an explanation, and this book provides it by examining the characters and the story in light of the biblical and historical context.

Good Intro Info!
This is a great listen for people who are interested in the broad topic - types of religions and some background. Each "major" religion is presented with some data- how many people follow it, dates, origin, distribution, etc. Then a little context is given- practices are mentioned, some excerpts from the religion's scripture, their main holidays, fun facts.
The book is neatly organized into sections, information is presented in an objective manner- pure information, no opinions, minimal bias.
Overall the information is kept at an introductory level which makes this a really easy listen- that is why it is described as "for younger listeners" but it is definitely NOT "dumbed down" and anybody looking for an overview of the major religions of the world should find this listen helpful :)

Good, Concise- Should be mandatory reading for all
I would recommend this audiobook to anybody looking for a brief overview of world religions. As someone who has really only ever been exposed to one religion (Christianity), this was exactly the summary I was looking for. Even though the publisher's summary says it's intended for a younger audience, I think this comment is unnecessary ; the material is meaningful and concise and not 'dumbed down' so to speak. I have since listened to it several times. It does seem that the religions are evenly presented without bias, although there is slightly more content devoted to Christianity, which is probably fair considering it's prominence and influence as a world religion. I do wish, however, that the audiobook publisher would actually synchronize chapters with the different religions; instead I had to add bookmarks.

Couldn't be better
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes! Anyone looking for what the book is about, ie a summary on the world's most prominent religions, cannot be disappointed. I was looking for that, found the book, and now I know what I wanted to know. It's that simple.
What does Adrian Grove bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Nothing special since what I was after is the story itself.
Any additional comments?
This is an area where there is clearly too much to write about. It's obviously a challenge to have such a succinct overview of religions and yet present the most important facts about them.I really enjoyed the book and will listen to it again before trying to find some more involved analyses. Thanks!
