About this listen
How would your life change if you genuinely accepted yourself, just the way you are? According to Dr. Tara Brach, feelings of shame and unworthiness are the source of many problems we experience with our relationships, careers, creative endeavors, and most fundamentally, our spiritual unfolding.
On Radical Self-Acceptance, this respected clinical psychologist and Buddhist meditation teacher shows you how to free yourself from the grip of your insecurities about being "good enough." With insights from both Eastern contemplative traditions and Western psychotherapies, Dr. Brach guides you through a full program of meditations and skills you need to become more compassionate toward the "unforgivable" parts of your self.
As Dr. Brach says, the most difficult - and pervasive - challenge to Westerners today is the suffering caused by our feelings of unworthiness and self-aversion. Radical Self-Acceptance offers a way to break out of this emotional prison, so you can discover the freedom that comes with kindness and true appreciation of yourself and others.

Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

Story
The relentless pursuit of high self-esteem has become a virtual religion - and a tyrannical one at that. Our ultracompetitive culture tells us we need to be constantly above average to feel good about ourselves, but there is always someone more attractive, successful, or intelligent than we are. And even when we do manage to grab hold of high self-esteem for a brief moment, we can't seem to keep it. Our sense of self-worth goes up and down like a ping-pong ball, rising and falling in lockstep with our latest success or failure.

When the difficulties and losses of life feel overwhelming, is there someplace we can turn for the safety, nurturing, and peace that we long for? Most of us are strongly conditioned to react with fear and confusion, falling back on strategies of judgment, control, addictive behaviors, and anger. Yet there is another way. “In any moment, no matter how lost we feel, we can take refuge in presence and love,” teaches Tara Brach.

Loving the lovable parts of your partner is easy. He's funny, charming, smart, successful, and kind. He's perfect. Except for when he is not. Like when he is late. Or short-tempered. Or impatient. Or lazy. Or he has just loaded the dishwasher incorrectly (again). Maybe he suddenly feels like the most frustrating person on the planet. Or maybe you're simply not feeling heard or seen. Or loved enough. Tremendous empowerment and liberation come from loving someone - and being loved - for who we really are.

Kristin Neff changed how we talk about self-care with her enormously popular first book, Self-Compassion. Now, 10 years and many studies later, she expands her body of work to explore a brand-new take on self-compassion. Although kindness and self-acceptance allow us to be with ourselves as we are, in all our glorious imperfection, the desire to alleviate suffering at the heart of this mindset isn't always gentle, sometimes it's fierce.

Love it!
Where does Radical Self-Acceptance rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
So far the best I have heard!
Any additional comments?
I really love the that author reads it as if she is talking to you as opposed to reading. It sounds very conversational and her voice is perfect for the content. It was very relaxing to listen too and it really calmed my thoughts.

A worthwhile investment of time
Even & soothing narration. Stories that illustrate concepts make it relatable. Explained my own behaviors & strategies; nice to know I'm not alone. Will listen & use meditations again.

A Special Book
My therapist recommended this and I’m about to listen through it a second time. Her voice and delivery are soothing and comforting. I found it to be powerful and a lot more than I expected overall. It’s like a gentle meditation through some serious and insightful information. Glad I found it. Not your typical audible book. If you’re meditating and doing the work this will likely resonate with you.

You will look deeper at yourself
Each time the author led us through a mediation I was surprised where I was taken. Some of the area's I was taken I was thought I had let go of long ago. Now I know I still had attachment to those moments. I did the complete meditations where the author took us through these moments then through how to see them, realize them and finally let them go. I found this as a deep book which allowed me to see myself as I truly am. I will listen to this again and probably again later. There is much more here than the meditations. There is much wisdom here as well, so get comfortable when the author asks you to and see where it takes you!
