About this listen
A SPECIAL 25TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION NARRATED BY THE AUTHOR
Discover the deliciously dark and fantastically funny No. 1 bestseller about a woman living life rather too well and being whisked away from it all, from the No. 1 bestselling author of Grown Ups
'How did it end up like this? Twenty-seven, unemployed, mistaken for a drug addict, in a treatment centre in the back arse of nowhere with an empty Valium bottle in my knickers . . .'
Meet Rachel Walsh.
She's been living it up in New York City, spending her nights talking her way into glamorous parties before heading home in the early hours to her hot boyfriend Luke.
But her sensible older sister showing up and sending her off to actual rehab wasn't quite part of her plan.
She's only agreed to her incarceration because she's heard that rehab is wall-to-wall jacuzzis, gymnasiums and rock stars going cold turkey - plus it's about time she had a holiday.
Saying goodbye to fun will be hard. But not as hard as losing the man who she realises, all too late, might just be the love of her life . . .
“Gloriously funny” SUNDAY TIMES
“Irresistible, profound . . . Keyes's comic gift is always evident” INDEPENDENT
“Comic, convincing and true” GUARDIAN
“Mercilessly funny” THE TIMES
“Funny, tender and completely absorbing!” GRAHAM NORTON

Story
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Story
Lucy Sullivan is 26 and living it up (and occasionally down) in London. Hers is a life of quiet, undisciplined desperation. But when she and three friends visit a psychic for a bit of fun and the woman's predictions start coming true, Lucy is horrified. For the fortune-teller insisted she'd soon be married - within the year, in fact. Not only does Lucy not have a boyfriend, but the chances of getting one are looking slim. Between the bottles of wine, antidepressants and her addiction to self-help books, she's not quite ready to walk, or even stumble, down the aisle sober.

High heels, movie deals, wagon wheels, shoes, reviews, having the blues, builders, babies, families and other calamities.... Many think that Marian Keyes leads a glitzy life of limos, television, and showbiz parties - but she would argue that she spends the majority of her life writing alone, wearing her PJs, and eating bananas with a laptop on a pillow in front of her. Sasha has had it. She cannot bring herself to respond to another inane, “urgent” email or participate in the corporate employee joyfulness program. She hasn’t seen her friends in months. Sex? Seems like a lot of effort. Even cooking dinner takes far too much planning. Sasha has hit a wall. Armed with good intentions to drink kale smoothies, try yoga, and find peace, she heads to the seaside resort she loved as a child. But it’s the off season, the hotel is in a dilapidated shambles, and she has to share the beach with the only other occupant: a grumpy guy named Finn.

After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Under the Duvet is a wide collection of her journalism and stories - all personal, closely observed, and painfully funny.

Veronica "Ronni" Johnson, licensed practical nurse and aspiring writer, meets the captivating Violet in the assisted living facility where Violet requires no assistance, just lots of male attention. I put my foster father behind bars. It doesn't matter that he deserved it. What matters is that he's powerful, manipulative, and now, he wants me dead. I can feel someone watching me. I know my time is running out. The only other person who cares if I live or die is a masked stranger. So I'm putting my life in the vigilante's hands - and maybe a piece of my heart along with it. Even though I'm worried that he's just as dangerous as the man I sent to prison.

Jude "Lucky" Lucketti wasn't just a sexy, brooding construction worker. He was my own personal hero, showing up in all the right places at the right times. Like when my car broke down and I needed a ride home, and when I face-planted on the sidewalk right in front of him and had to be taken to the emergency room. We became friends, and it didn't matter that he was 16 years older than me. We had a lot in common - like our love of old rock music and vintage fast cars and our aversion to relationships.

Blue Echohawk doesn't know who she is. She doesn't know her real name or when she was born. Abandoned at two and raised by a drifter, she didn't attend school until she was ten years old. At nineteen, when most kids her age are attending college or moving on with life, she is just a senior in high school. With no mother, no father, no faith, and no future, Blue Echohawk is a difficult student, to say the least.

Nice read.
Great narration. Story is good. Not an obsessive page turner but I looked forward to picking up where I left off.

Listening to Marian read was even better than when I read the book myself.
The honesty and precision of the way Marian
Keyes can put her thoughts on to paper just keeps on amazing me. I soak up her thoughts as though I am the character. That is a true talent. Being Irish also helps, we have no problem making light of ourselves. But It was the subliminal way I received an insight into the world of addiction that was the takeaway prize of listening to “Rachel’s holiday”. Marians style of writing is like listening to your true friends talk openly about their dirty knickers or their lack of money. I loved the story, loved the author and loved her reading her own masterpiece . I highly recommend listening, even if you read it before, as I had!

Funny, witty and heartfelt
Revolving around a common and sensitive subject of substance abuse, this clever book keeps you following the drama with expectation.
You’ll end up loving the characters with empathy going into overdrive.
The witty humour and one liners, let alone being read with the Irish accent made me want more.

Best psychotherapy ever!
I loved everything about this book! At once serious as well as hilariously funny, I haven't enjoyed a book this much in I don't remember how long. What a fabulous author and narrator - the two don't always go hand in hand - now Marion Keyes has become a favorite!

The author's portrayal of addiction and hope was artfully woven with humor along with the pain.
The author realistically portrayed experiences faced by those who love people with addictions without making the story a complete downer. The story was written with the right mix pain, humor, and hope to keep me reading.
