About this listen
The secret of having an adventure is getting lost. Who ever visited an enchanted kingdom or fell into a fairy tale without wandering into the woods first? Well, Mary is lost. Mary is lost in the story of Little Red Riding Hood, and that is a cruel and murderous story. She's put on the red hood and met the wolf. When she gives in to her wolf's temptations, she will die. That's how the story goes, after all. Unfortunately for the story and unfortunately for the wolf, this Little Red Riding Hood is Mary Stuart, and she is the most stubborn and contrary 12-year-old the world has ever known. Forget the wolf's temptations, forget the advice of the talking rat trying to save her - Mary will kick her way through every myth and fairy tale ever told until she finds a way to get out of this alive. Her own way and no one else's.

Being a superhero should be fun. After all, a world of super powers is a world where Amazonian juggernauts made of candy battle guys in spandex that drive talking cars. Irene loves that weirdness, loves the game of fighting, and loves being a four-foot-tall woman who still gets to drop big heavy objects on villains' heads. In 1980, that fun is in danger. A mad scientist who murders people for his research has everyone afraid. Two of the friendliest super-powered rivals around stop playing and go for the kill.

What would you do with an enchanted kingdom of living puppets? Would you look for adventures, or enjoy the sights of a stranger-than-strange land? Would you rest and make friends in this one safe place, or build new wonders for the next child who needs a refuge? Would you rule? Would you smash your toys, because the outside world hurts? Two girls have come to the land of Here and There, and a little doll named Heartfelt was the first to meet them both.

Story
In a world full of super powers, Felix has a pretty crappy one. He has the ability to modify any item he owns. To upgrade anything. Sounds great on paper. Almost like a video game. Except that the amount of power it takes to actually change, modify, or upgrade anything worthwhile is beyond his abilities. With that in mind, Felix settled into a normal life. A normal job. His entire world changes when the city he lives in is taken over by a super villain. Becoming a country of one city. A city state.

Callum had seen things all his life. There are monsters and beasts living among people, but he learned very early not to admit such things, not if he didn’t want people to think him crazy. It turns out that the supernatural is real, but at 30, Callum has no desire to be part of that secret. Not that he has a choice when it turns out he is a mage, albeit one that hasn’t cast any spells in all his life. There are requirements, duties, and education that the powers that be insist he be subject to. To hell with that.

Jin Rou wanted to be a cultivator. A man powerful enough to defy the heavens. A master of martial arts. A lord of spiritual power. Unfortunately for him, he died, and now I’m stuck in his body. Arrogant Masters? Heavenly Tribulations? All that violence and bloodshed? Yeah, no thanks. I’m getting out of here. Farm life sounds pretty great. Tilling a field by hand is fun when you’ve got the strength of ten men—though maybe I shouldn’t have fed those Spirit Herbs to my pet rooster.

In the world’s most magical metropolis where spirits run noodle shops and cash-strapped dragons stage photo-ops for tourists, people still think fairies are nothing but stories, and that’s exactly how the fairies like it. It’s a lot easier to feast on humanity’s dreams when no one believes you exist. But while this arrangement works splendidly for most fair folk, Lola isn’t one of the lucky ones.

A fun story worth reading and rereading
This story has interesting characters and an intriguing world that is itself a collage of story worlds, some of which are very familiar and others entirely original. The story isn't just about Mary, but about stories themselves, the power they have, the way they grow and change with the telling, the way they follow patterns, and how someone savvy to these patterns can manipulate them. This is also one of those stories that benefits from a second reading l, where you go "oh yeah, he DID say that" or "She was just looking at it the wrong way". I can't say any more about that without spoilers, but I'm a sucker for prophecies that come true in cleverly unexpected ways and clues that you don't NEED to get to enjoy the story, but if you DO get them, you feel really clever. If you like stories about stories and magic and growing as a person, I think you'll like this one.

Best story I've ever read or heard
This is the oldest story I can think of. Told so many different ways, it's like a living thing. The way Roberts told it... No words. Experience it yourself.
For people wanting to know why I say that, I'll give a few reasons. The characters are deep, real, and believable, they bring the story to life. The MC is perfect in every way for a modern telling of this story. The villain... The main villain of this story is at the same time the most horrible, terrifying, and awe inspiring thing I've read about. The villain made this story, and always has, but his time you get every note. You will hate him, fear him, feel utter disgust, but you can't dismiss him or his memory. Last, the world... Or Worlds. Every story and all their Worlds. Mythology, fairytales, horror, mystery, history, fantasy, and steam punk... I think the only world that didn't really appear was a solid sci-fi... Though it got close a couple times.
Just read or listen to this book. It is the best book I have ever read or listened to.

A very dark fairy tale.
This story is very dark and gets darker as it progresses. The main character, Red Riding Hood, AKA: Mary Stuart, is only 12 years old. What she knows is far beyond what any 12 year old should know. She comes across a lot older. Even the voice used. It is a woman's voice. I'm sure it's the narrator's normal voice and the story is told on first person POV, but it doesn't work to "suspend disbelief " for anyone to see the character as a 12 year old. So if you enjoy dark fairy tale retelling S, this book is probably for you. If you don't like dark and sinister, which I'm not a fan, don't.

Weird and disturbing book that I cannot unread
I very rarely write negative reviews, but I can’t unread this book so maybe I can help you decide if this book is right for you. Firstly, the main character is a 12-year-old girl wearing a “tarty” costume who strings together cursewords like a foul-mouthed adult. She has a wolf who wants to ravish her, and yet is called “little girl” throughout the book. I don’t like the sexual connotations relating to a child. Seems creepy and disturbing. Secondly, Mary has adventure after adventure…after adventure. They all are pretty random and not connected. I felt like the story didn’t flow well. And lastly, some parts were disturbing to the point that I am left feeling unsettled. Upon finishing it, I just feel depressed.

Good book to listen to
This is about how kids can handle themselves at a young age who probably needs help taking care of themselves even though nobody will do it for them not even lifting a finger to help. it’s about how in hard times you can make friends and help each other get through it. Marry is neglected 12 year old girl who was bullied at a Halloween party and lucked in a small hallway where she meets a talking rat named rat in boots. She was chased by monsters in a world not her own and she doesn’t want to go back home to her mom or her party “friends”. The reasons that Marry cusses so much in this book is probably because she heard it from her mom at a young age and it just shows how much her mom just didn’t care but I think this story gets a Happy ending

Suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucksss. I was only going to write suuuuucks but my review won't post without the 14 words minimum. I feel I already wasted enough of my time trying to get through this stupid drawn out plot. I am upset that I had to give it a one star rating.
