 “Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed” (Mark 1:35). From the earliest parts of the gospel, we are informed of Jesus’ prayer life. Everything Jesus did, flowed from His life of prayer. And everything we do, should flow out of prayer as well. What we do in life, our missions, our ministry, our actions and endeavors, are all to a great extent determined through prayer or the lack thereof. That is an essential lesson for anyone seeking to live a certain faith to learn. Prayer is a lifeline for those seeking to live a certain faith. Jesus was a man of prayer and even spent entire nights in prayer (Matthew 19:13; 26:36-44; Mark 6:46; 9:29; Luke 6:12; 22:45). Jesus set aside time to pray during critical times in His life and ministry (Luke 3:21; 6:12; 9:18; 22:44; 23:46). When we look at the early church, we see that the ministry of the apostles was bathed in prayer (Acts 1:14; 2:42; 6:4; 12:5). Paul exhorts believers to pray for everyone, especially those in positions of authority (1 Timothy 2:1). Paul himself was continually in prayer (1 Timothy 5:5). Jesus taught that prayer and faith linked believers to the resources of God (Mark 11:24). Prayer was important to Jesus; therefore, it should be important to us. When I was a child, one of my favorite television shows was Diver Dan. Diver Dan was a deep see diver who wore an uncomfortable looking underwater suit with a metal helmet and glass window on it. This suit had a single tube connected to it to pass air to Diver Dan so he could explore the ocean floor. He was able to discover all kinds of interesting things as he plodded and searched down there. He was able to interact with puppet characters like Miss Minerva, a mermaid, Baron Barracuda and others. It was a fascinating children’s program by the standards of the day. But the thing that enabled Diver Dan do what he did, that was apparent to even a young child like me, was that oxygen hose attached to his helmet. That hose was essential. Diver Dan couldn’t breathe under water without that hose! That hose not only allowed him to explore, it was his lifeline. Martin Luther the Reformer once said, “To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing.” Prayer, is our lifeline; it enables us to spiritually breath; which further enables us to explore the heights and depths and widths and all of God’s plans for us in life.
