Fr. Rolheiser outlines four essentials for a deep spiritual life. First, like the good but sad, rich young man we have to give our entire selves to the Lord. Secondly, we have to sustain and appreciate a high level of tension in our life as we deal with our basic humanity and our membership in the Church. Third, we have to go beyond our feelings and thoughts about faith and demonstrate it with our actions and our presence in the midst of God’s people.

Story
At one of the lowest points in Henri Nouwen’s life, he gave a series of lectures on the importance of following Jesus in an age of anxiety. Drawn from those talks, this new work reveals what sustained Nouwen to remain faithful to the teachings of Jesus and led him to become an icon of compassion and vulnerability. Here, he writes eloquently about calling and purpose, fear and hope. And he explains why - with so many choices available to the 21st-century seeker - the greatest reward for those looking for spiritual direction is rediscovering Jesus’ teaching on love.

Story
Franciscan priest Richard Rohr feels that there is no more challenging spiritual issue than the “problem of the self". Most of contemporary spiritual teaching, he believes, is still trying to inspire and fortify the private self, the autonomous "I". Even much church work is trying to evangelize and sacramentalize what many would call "the false self." Basic transformation is not expected, but merely a new set of beliefs and practices or loyal membership in a new group.

Story
The enlightenment you seek in other religions has been present in Christianity from the beginning. Richard Rohr, a global leader in spiritual awakening, helps you recognize the forces (such as ego resistance and dual thinking) that separate you from your deeper self. Then, drawing from Gospels and the greatest Christian contemplatives, he shows you what it means to be spiritually awake. You will learn why your ego resists change and growth, what is useful about popular ideas such as the law of attraction, what Jesus, the first mythical leader in the West, can teach you.

Story
In the first half of life, we are naturally preoccupied with establishing ourselves; climbing, achieving, and performing. But as we grow older and encounter challenges and mistakes, we need to see ourselves in a different and more life-giving way. This message of falling down - that is in fact moving upward - is the most resisted and counterintuitive of messages in the world's religions. Falling Upward offers a new paradigm for understanding one of the most profound of life's mysteries: how those who have fallen down are the only ones who understand "up".

Prayer in Our Life
Father Ronald Rolheiser's book on prayer is both interesting and practical. As in other of Fr. Rolheiser he combines story, practice and imagination. Fr. Rolheiser's reading of his short but challenging presentation on prayer in our daily life keeps our attention and invites us to explore our own experiences of prayer.

Can You Hear Me Now?
Prayer is our natural life line to God who created us. Each time you read the book Prayer, you are going to find a new pearl or coin. PThe pearl I found is just “show up.” The coin I found is “love”. God just loves you and He is great at loving you

Good down-to Earth primer on practice of prayer
What did you like best about Prayer? What did you like least?
What I found most heartening is the practical nature of the discussion. The author acknowledges the 24/7 nature of our lives, complete with distractions of work, family, & avalanche of stimuli (iPod, iPhone, iPad, iNeed, iWant, & iMust) that make it difficult to "show up" & be fully "present" regularly for prayer. The impact of our moods, health, emotional state, & simply being human are not seen as character flaws in growth via the practice of prayer. These things simply....are. No guilt, no shame, in praying when we are ticked-off, feeling guilty, or in a "murderous" fame of mind. Prayer is presented in its fullest dimension letting the reader know that God accepts us. Period. But most of all want us to know He/She walks with us each & every moment, even when we feel forgotten, & how the daily practice of prayer brings us closer to that awareness over time no matter what circumstances we face.
What aspect of Alan Hirt’s performance would you have changed?
Bear in mind that this is a not entertainment. The delivery was simple & straight forward as it should be. Mr. Hirt did not speak in a monotone nor an inappropriately upbeat manner. It seems like the standard college lecture experience; however, the topic's depth and spiritual nature was not compromised by the delivery.
Could you see Prayer being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
Not entertainment material.
